I'm looking to buy a new router and backup drive to wirelessly backup our laptops. My question is can you have the backup software backup a file as you work on it? So if my wife saves her research paper on the laptop at 5pm it will be saved on the backup drive connected to the router almost at the same time?

I'm familiar with hard wired backup drives that backup at a designated time, but I have not set up a network backup drive before and would like it to be more live in case our laptops are not on every night at that certain backup time.

Most of our clients do a backup schedule of nightly but we have a few that do a continuous file level backup using crashplan, which could either go to the cloud or network storage. We also do some image based backups to network storage every 15 minutes, mainly for servers with databases that change constantly. That might be overkill for what you're looking for.

How about using a dropbox folder to save files that she is currently working on? If she doesn't want the file to live on dropbox forever, then she can move it out.

Does anyone use second copy? I haven't used it in a while, so don't remember if you can set it up to sync every 10 minutes, or whatever frequency you might want.

I moved to one drive a year or two ago and haven't looked back. Really have no need for NAS unless you are wanting to stream media. Imo, office 365 with 1 TB of one drive storage for $70 a year is a pretty good deal
