Is this the year a #16 seed upsets a #1 seed?

Since this board obviously needs another March Madness thread, it's time for the obligatory "will a 16 beat a 1" conversation. #1 seeds are 124-0 vs their lowly brethren, and it's been 20 years since a game has come down to the last possession.

This has been a crazy year full of headscratching losses from top teams, but 16 seeds are just so bad. FGCU may have the most hope, but does it happen for any of them this year?

I still remember Princeton having that last shot against big bad Georgetown and totally blowing it.

it'll happen soon if they keep giving teams like FGCU #16 seeds

No.

But... FGCU at least has a puncher's chance of pulling the upset over UNC. They won't, mind you, but they are one of the best 16 seeds in memory and I do have faith in Roy Williams' ability to pull a fantastic choke job. i wouldn't predict it or anything, or even say it's likely, but I can at least envision FGCU pulling an upset if everything breaks right.

Also, UVA plays at such a slow pace, they may not put away Hampton. Again, really unlikely, but within the realm of possibility. Don't put any money on it.

I hate all the Automatic bids to shite teams like Southern and FGCU.

If they allowed all the decent Power 5 teams that made the NIT in as a 13-16 seed, this tournament would be so much better.

And yes, the bottom seed of an NIT team would probably beat a 1 seed at least 5-10% of the time. It's essentially like LSU beating Oregon on a neutral floor. Not out of the question at all.

Not this year.

When the 2 play-in games I didn't like the fact that they used it for the 16 seed. I thought it should be used for bubble teams to prove that they should be in. Now that their are 4 play-in games, I think it's good for the 16 seed to play in the "opening four." It gives them a chance to claim an NCAA win in their history books. I'd like to see all 4 16 slots use the play in game.

FGCU would be worth watching if they weren't playing UNC. I think UNC is the most talented team in the whole tournament and the toughest out if they feel like defending.

There's never a good chance that a 16 will be a 1 seed, but if it's going to happen this year, watch for Southern vs. Oregon (assuming Southern can win tonight)

Oregon is the weakest of the #1 seeds and they aren't a great defensive team. Defense travels, while offense can come and go. Plus, unlike KU, UVA, UNC, their guys have never dealt with this kind of expectation. Southern has played a relatively tough schedule and performed relatively well for a SWAC team in their OOC games beating Miss. St. and Wyoming on the road, and losing in the final minute at Memphis.

While State, Wyoming and Memphis aren't anywhere close to as good as Oregon, I don't think Southern would be overwhelmed. Remember, they damn near beat 1 seed Gonzaga 3 years ago. That was a team, like Oregon, who was sailing in uncharted waters with expectations of a Final Four. Who knows!!!
