OT Electrician wiring question

So Ive replaced 3 ceiling fans so far and Ive got one to go...well the wiring out of ceiling in this room has black red white and a bare ground...the instructions call to only connect black and white. So the red is just left alone right? Whats it there for?

Do you have two switches in this room. one switch controls red and the other controls the black wire.
In other words this room may have been wired for a fan and a light.

White is neutral, the black and red are hot for the fan and or light. Sounds like you have a spare hot bc you do not have a light kit on your fan.

Hold the red wire in one hand, flip the switch with the other.
