I do fairly often. Just a few dollars.

What this guy said

I work in the CBD in New Orleans. One day I worked late and walked to my parking garage. I saw a brand new car pull up. It was nicer than what I was driving at the time.

Out of the car gets a ton of 20ish year old kids that "look" homeless but obviously aren't. They have their dogs with them as well.

For obvious reasons that tempered my sympathy going forward.

Not long ago a guy walked up to my son and I outside a Taco Bell and asked for some money for food. I said you want money or something to eat. He said, "I want something to eat". I bought him dinner.

He appreciated it and I was glad I could help.

I have a soft spot for folks on the street. None of us know their situation, and yes, everything is a situation. I was at the mall in spanish fort meeting some buddies for lunch at Poor Mexican one day so I grabbed a bunch of tacos and burritos to go. When i left I saw a homeless family with kids sitting on the curb by the red light so I motioned the dad over and gave him the bag. He seemed very grateful and some arse bag in a huge truck honked his horn and flipped me off for stopping.

Liberal? You have got to be kidding. As one who has been among their ranks and know what can lead to a person being there. I can say with a 100% certainty that most of you don't know what the hell you are talking about.

Try and give them something other than money, like a free lunch. They won't take it because they want the money to buy liquor, cigs, and drugs

You don't have to be rude. When they ask for money I just say 'I'm sorry I don't carry cash.'

If I'm walking to/from a store I'll offer to buy food and/or water instead. I've yet to be taken up on that offer.

I help the homeless but not via money.

I sometimes buy them food.

Sometimes provide necessary items like socks, shoes, light jackets etc.

Had an interesting conversation with a homeless guy the other night sitting outside a gas station. We talked for ten minutes and he never asked me for anything. I shook his hand and as I walked back to my truck said frick it went back and gave him 20 bucks and thanked him for the conversation. I don't care what he used it for

As someone who deals with them almost every single day I am at work, I know exactly what I am talking about. In 20 years I can count on my hand those that could be considered the "down on their luck" types (and even that is a stretch). Hundreds of them are bums, hucksters or addicts. You are just subsidizing crime in that localized area.

The same people who would lambaste some vapid chick's GoFundMe campaign for fake boobs will roll down their car window and throw bills to a bum and say, "why do I care if he spends it on crack?"

My SO gives food, if we are eating somewhere and there is extra, she gets it to go and finds someone who appears to be needy.

Giving those veterans money on the street merely reinforces their link to street life without helping them one iota.

The people that give tangible items (food, clothing, etc) I applaud. The ones that throw a dollar or two? Not one bit. It's not compassion that motivates mini-van mommies to give. It's either fuzzy-headed guilt or momentary, "Look at me, everybody! Look how giving I am!" attention seeking.

I give every now and then. I don't care where it goes--I like to spend money on drugs and alcohol, so why would I judge someone for doing the same?

Saw something similar one time.

Was at WalMart and parked towards the back of the lot because I was waiting for a friend or trying to kill time for som reason. After a few mins I see a fairly new bright blue Jeep Wrangler pull into a spot in the back corner not far away from me. Out steps a white guy prob mid 30s but dressed in really dirty/grungy clothes and his hair and face looked dirty. He goes to the back and out jumps a German Shepherd and he pulls out a cardboard sign and starts walking toward the road.

Sure enough when I finally leave he was out at the corner a few blocks down panhandling

It might be wrong but after seeing that I don't trust any of them any more
