So why is AAU ruining basketball?

I've heard this countless times but never understood why

It's not AAU itself, it is the coaches that are making a living off of being amateur basketball coaches. I gained so much more from AAU than I did my high school team

AAU is about dunks/ highlight reels; not developing any skill.
Which is why a lot of guys who are in it are either terrible from the line or the field

Because they coddle the better players and dont teach any fundamentals or teach them to execute offensively of defensively. Also, it is very watered down because every dad/uncle has a team and they throw them together as quickly as they fold. Also give the kids inflated egos that the high school coaches have to get back in check because their is no accountability because they will jump from team to team.

Because the AAU tournaments are basically showcase tournaments. There is no real coaching involved. The teams are basically all-star teams playing streetball.

My cousin who is a very good high school coach refuses to let any of his players play AAU basketball for every reason you mentioned. Its all true, and he has removed a few good players from his team because of it.

IMG is on the verge of ruining high school sports.
How many of these academies will start to gain traction around the country

There is very little team play and defense, which are critical pieces to becoming a good basketball player. AAU is for "a player trying to get his", leading to more flash instead of developing the fundamental pieces of their game.
It is why you have players like Rajon Rondo who can dribble and do flashy things, but can't hit the broad side of a barn shooting. Guys can do 360 dunks, but barely shoot 50% from the FT line.
AAU is basically pickup games with the same jersey on.

Isn't that was Oak Hill is? That Military school in Virginia where a bunch of football players were going when they didn't qualify. I think Keiland Williams went there when he left Nawtside. Hargrave Military Academy?

There are a bunch of academies. Oak hill. Findley. IMG. IMG is just getting all the attention because of football. Schools like oak hill, Findley and Monte verde have been doing this for years.

My guess is one is going to be in Louisiana soon.
Lafayette Christian Academy is trying to become one with the way they run their basketball program. There are a few others around the state as well that do the same.

Most, not all, AAU coaches only care about running and playing selfish basketball. Little to no fundamentals and many times inflate the ego of their players.
Many, not all, of the coaches instill in the players that fundamental basketball (running offenses, slowing the pace of the game down) is boring basketball.
I coached a student who had their AAU coach tell them that we needed to "run" to be successful. Needless to say a fast break style did not suit the talent on our team. Took a while for the student to understand that good basketball doesn't equal running.
Dad eventually made them break contact with the AAU coach because he started to realize that it was hindering them instead of helping them on the court.
Have heard many coaches tell the same story.
Most AAU coaches are only interested in winning crappy tournaments and have no concern for actually teaching fundamental basketball.

Reserve was becoming one. Riverside is pretty close.

Was going to say what makes aau basketball so big is the bag man/ ability for some bum to get a college job by pimping out a kid
Posted on 1/27/16 at 12:00 pm to trusaint
and all the elite players travel the country playing one another, therefore crappy players play in crappy tournaments against other crappy players and never get any better.

AAU exists bc high school basketball is a waste of time for future lottery picks...
You don't get better dominating kids who should be getting your autograph...
Btw the new term is "grassroots"

They have made it more about the showcase than the development. As such, players are being taught to develop a showcase game in lieu of a winning mentality.
There is also the issue with the coaches selling the players out to shoe companies for their own personal profit.
Posted on 1/27/16 at 1:28 pm to Jester
The worst part about the AAU coaches, is that the shoe companies have aligned with some, so that gave them even more power to corrupt.
the Cali AAU coaches are some of the worst.

This is actually a valid concern. I can't believe people are still throwing out the "it doesn't teach fundamentals and ruins the game" line.
