Lafayette Christian Academy is trying to become one with the way they run their basketball program.

It's not AAU itself, it is the coaches that are making a living off of being amateur basketball coaches.

Boom! This is exactly what the issue is. Well put.

This is actually a valid concern. I can't believe people are still throwing out the "it doesn't teach fundamentals and ruins the game" line.

The "fundamentals" concern goes hand in hand with the concerns listed above.

You have coaches who only care about winning meaningless tournaments and having their teams do nothing but run and try and get flashy dunks so that they can make a highlight reel.

There are a ton of young players with tremendous athletic ability who are coached by people with this mentality in both AAU and high school. Coaches worried more about making highlight reels for self promotion as opposed to teaching solid fundamentals and basketball discipline.

For some kids this doesn't really hurt them. However you are left with kids that have a ton of athleticism and raw talent but absolutely zero fundamentals. Thus when they step up against teams/competition that are well coached and have disciplined play they end up getting exposed.

Well, there aren't too many "lottery picks" out there. There may be a lot of people who THINK they are going to be a lottery pick.

When I watch Ben Simmons play, I often tell myself that is a guy who played too much AAU.

Most AAU coaches are only interested in steering their players to colleges that will pay them under the table.

The worst part about the AAU coaches, is that the shoe companies have aligned with some, so that gave them even more power to corrupt.
I was just about to post this. Take note of how many kids playing on Nike AAU teams wind up signing with Nike colleges. (I realize most colleges probably wear Nike but allegedly a lot of top end AAU teams/programs are tied in with Nike and steer kids to certain colleges). The head coach is a dirty bastard but is paid by Nike, another way colleges dont have a money trail to recruits. Nike (and others) are way more powerful than people realize. This could be exaggerated of course, just regurgitating some things people have said over the years.

Disagree. Simmons is very fundamentally sound, great passer, sees the floor, etc. A typical AAU guy MUST cross someone over and break ankles or no cred.
