I shoot a 7mm Rem mag, with a Rem Core-Lokt 150 gr. I prefer to shoot for dead center of the shoulder. The deer that do not drop usually do not bleed for at least 40 yds from spot of shot. Is this ammo or shot placement?

I actually have that same problem with my .270 and the remmington core lock. The last two deer i shot with it were good shots but left little to no blood. Luckily i was still able to find each deer

I think there are many factors to consider. I shot a doe with .270 Win 130gr Core lokt last yr and she started bleeding immediately and left a huge blood trail while running 50 yards.

I shot another doe this yr with same load and this doe didnt start bleeding for 30 yards and still wasnt much blood trail during the 100 yd recovery until the last 15-20 yards. She was double lunged too.

I dunno but it kills them dead. I havent lost a deer with Core lokts yet so at $18/box I will keep buying them.

I shoot behind the shoulder. 270 130 gr core lokt. Lots of blood. Dead deer.

Pretty much anything outside of 100 yards will bleed like crazy when shot by my .300wsm with Barnes TTSX. Within 100 yards, it doesn't really expand when shot behind the shoulder. However, if shot right on the shoulder, they drop or run less than 15 yards. That ammo is fricken deadly but it is very expensive.

The problem is core locts don't handle that kind of velocity well and over-expand especially when they hit bone. Shoot something like a nosler partition, swift A frame, barns X, etc if you want to blast shoulders with high velocity calibers.

130 grain .270 Winchester Power Points are the only bullets proven to make a deer bleed 100% of the time. I keep my clip full of them.

Is that where you are actually hitting them? They usually drop when the shoulder blade is hit.

Hitting a little lower leaves a better/earlier blood trail than hitting a little high; something to do with gravity and science.

If you can't kill with Core-Lokt then I don't know. I personally use Nosler Accubond 165 gr .308. All 3 deer dropped and didn't take a step and one was a nasty gut shot.

I have had the best results with Barnes TTSX. I mainly shoot a 30.06 (7mm Rem Mag on a few big fields-450 yards or so). The Barnes will drop them. It also works very well on hogs.

I have also had good luck with Nosler Partition and Core Lokt.

I did not like Remmington Scirocco. Shot an entire box and did not have any exit wounds. Deer and hogs would always have to be tracked. The Barnes will knock a 100# hog on its arse. Like it got hit by a truck. DRT.

Highly recommend the Barnes.

My sons first deer was killed this year with remington .270 core-lokt managed recoil

dropped the deer where it stood!

Perfect shot placement took out both lungs and top of heart @ 82 yds.

However I do have concerns that the bullet never exited the deer. The deer was slightly quartering and the opposite shoulder stopped the bullet from exiting...that shoulder bone did not break...

bullet was recovered looks to have expanded well and retained most of it's weight, but shed some of the mushroom blades

two possible factors though...

Managed recoil or Core-Lokt

thoughts?

edit: I have usually use Federal Premium Nosler partitions and need to switch back to them in my .270...it's just that I was letting him use mine until he got his Rifle for Christmas...so I re zeroed for the managed recoil core-lokt...and now my 13 yo daughter wants to kill a deer so I'm stuck with the managed recoil core-lokt for now

Love Hornady sst and reload them for my 7 mag,.308 and .243. Haven't had any issues with poor expansion yet.

100% shot placement. All this bullet type bs goes away when you shoot them in the neck...

Did I do that right?

Shot placement.

I've dropped a deer before with 5.56 FMJ and had one run with 7mm nosler accubonds

I'm really surprised at all the non believers for Core Lokt

I shoot 180g out of my 30-06 amd 150g with my 280. Thinking back, I've never lost a deer with either gun, barely had any run over 50-75 yards and always had an exit.

It's been said, but cor lokts just aren't very well made bullets. They are unpredictable, especially at higher velocities produced by magnums and 270win rifles. There's a reason they are cheap.

I've been shooting accu bonds in everything from a 270 win to a 300 wsm for about 6 years and it has performed well. I have never had a problem with bal tips when shot into deer sized animals. Most all would exit and damn few ever left. And I'm talking about a large test group of animals.

Best performing bullet in my 270win has been the 130gr Speer boat tail, but I have zero complaints about the accu bond.

FTR, most bullet performance arguments a largely bullshite and most "bullet failure" stories are usually poor shot placement by people that think way more of their abilities then they should. Usually, if you put it there, it does it's job, especially on whitetails. They're just not that hard to kill.
