re: Shaq: If LSU would have paid Saban, LSU would be Alabama

This is the best statement I've seen yet on here that supports the fact that LSU should have done whatever it had to do to get Nick back from Miami. Bad PR? Sure. Leave you with a sick feeling? Yeah. But the 10 years after would have proven it to be the right decision. Heck, Bama might have even hired Les. it wouldn't have been the end of his career.
Again, ignore anything that happened after 2008.
This is LSU's record over the 7 seasons prior to Nick Saban quitting the Dolphins.
Year 1 - 8-3 (1-0 postseason) (Coach A)
Year 2 - 8-3 (2-0) (Coach A)
Year 3 - 8-4 (0-1) (Coach A)
Year 4 - 11-1 (2-0) (Coach A)
Year 5 - 9-2 (0-1) (Coach A)
Year 6 - 11-1 (1-1) (Coach B)
Year 7 - 10-2 (1-0) (Coach B)
Year 8 - ?
Your position is that, prior to year 8, LSU should have FIRED Coach B and re-hired Coach A, and paid him significantly more than anyone had ever been paid for the position.
It's just ridiculous. Not only would it have been unprecedented in college football, but I don't think anything like that has ever happened in history of any position or job.
What you believe that LSU should have done has literally never been done by any person or entity in the history of ever. There was no evidence in 2006 that Saban could put together consecutive seasons with less than 3 losses.

Didn't he do a sideline interview during the A&M game talking about how they were doing Les wrong?

Shaq is a great ambassador for LSU, but he's dumber than a bag of leaves sometimes.

t's possible that there was nothing that could have been done, but I don't think we did absolutely everything possible to keep him here.
Shitty season, quit recruiting. You guys are fricking delusional. He leveraged LSU every season. He was leaving no matter what. LSU is lucky Miles didn't bolt back in 07 as well.

Your post makes NO sense.
Saban was never up for bid.
LSU was NEVER under consideration when his NFL failure was certain.
Get it through your thick skulls that he was never going to return to LSU. EVER.

Ok, fine. As well as we've recruited though you dont think Saban is the one guy who could/would have bettered that?
Where is Cam Robinson playing right now? Where does Landon Collins go? Come on man.
Better yet, if saban didn't go back to bama, Les would be the goat. He'd have at least 2 more titles. Possibly more. You got to think some of those recruits LSU battled saban and Bama for may have came to LSU instead.

You should know that I meant we should have done whatever it took to get him back when it became known he was leaving the NFL to return to college coaching. Its not that difficult to figure out. I wasn't speculating about other possible factors that didn't exist. The situation that actually did exist was that he was leaving the NFL and he was available.
How old are you?
He denied that he was leaving the Dolphins several times and up until the moment he signed with the Tide.
It was never known that he was leaving, he said so himself more than once.
We know now that he is a liar but it wasn't apparent back then. Please get your facts straight. You have all the facilities in Tuscaloosa to provide you with them.

Most/all coaches do...even CLM.
Lot of people in the know said he put out feelers on possibility of coming back to LSU...maybe they are all liars but I seriously doubt Bama was able to hire Saban without any other programs knowing it was going on.

Which is why they came to within an eyelash of signing Rich Rod at that time?

I love Shaq, but he is wrong.
Also, had Saban stayed at LSU, things would not be much different for LSU.

I have no idea. I am talking about nobody having any clue Saban was interested in returning to college fb until bama hired him...I doubt it was as big of a secret as you think

Spinoff topic: how many head coaches have voluntarily departed a team (meaning: HC's who weren't fired) and gone to a conference/divisional rival?
I'm sure there are examples, but I can't think of any. That rarity demonstrates that it's taboo, which is why I actively dislike Saban and will not praise him despite his accomplishments.

It wasn't.
Saban was calling Jimbo nearly every week lamenting. He regretted it as soon as training camp started and he couldn't control the egos.

I'm 38. And yes, it was known by those who needed to know that he was available. Either way, it didn't happen. But I'm sick of seeing the "get over it" comments...everyone wants to get over it. The only way to get over it, though, is to be competitive against the guy. Beat him. You don't have to dominate him, just don't be dominated by him.

Ask Ole Miss how they like losing Tubberville (sp?) to Auburn.

It would not have mattered. The NFL was an "itch" that Saban just had to scratch at some point...

yeh I didn't think so.

I'd like to see some documentation on that. How many years did he call him every week?
I do believe he had a problem with being in a room with people whose egos were as big as his is.
