sidebar question: Does anyone know if the miles you accumulate on the southwest card can be transferred to another credit card you intend to switch to... i.e. Chase Southwest Visa -> Chase Sapphire?

No, they cannot. Those southwest points are technically property of Southwest and have a dollar value in the airlines eyes. It appears on their financial reports.

The southwest CC points don't expire so that's nice, but the Sapphire points can be redeemed on a lot of airlines.

Yup, flew to Thailand and back in business class on Asiana, Thai, and United airlines using Chase UR points last month.

Nothing like having a lie flat bed and some nice South Korean girls making you sandwiches whenever you want.
