Good laughs in this thread...I remember reading this tailgating book I found in the LSU Union about these two guys who decided to go on their dream tailgating trips each weekend for a whole college football season. They said LSU wasn't even on their list because it was during the Curley years, but a number of people told them that they needed to go to LSU. So they decided to go to LSU vs Auburn. They said something like while going around tailgates early in the day, they ran into Curley Hallman having a beer at one of the tailgates. They ran into LSU's offensive coordinator the night before at a restaurant/bar (they had to be told who it was) and he was talking about what they were going to do against Auburn and how Auburn wouldn't be ready for it.

Anyway, Auburn won 34-10 or something, but the guys doing the book went to all these great rivalry games, but said Baton Rouge was their favorite place on earth after their stop. They said even though it was like a funeral march after the game, they could only imagine what it would be like when LSU started winning again if the environment was that good when they were losing.

Paging LSUCharles...

Let him tell you the detailed story of the 1985 Liberty Bowl Fiasco.

a) Arnsparger allowed players to drive themselves up to Memphis
b) The morning of pre-game walkthrough, the gates were locked and they had it in the parking lot. Nicky Hazrad jumped on a car and yelled "Merry fricking Christmas!"
c) Obviously, LSU lost to Baylor.

good friend of mine was on that team ..... lots of cannabis and alcoholic beverages were consumed on the ride to Memphis. After Norman Jefferson's punt return for a TD, it was all downhill from there

Although not directly a Curley Hallman story, I remember being at one of LSU's games in '91 or '92 in the student section, we were losing, and the crowd had dissipated. Four drunk, distinctly non-students (mid-thirties and very much red necks) meandered into the student section, and for about an entire half stood and screamed "F##K you, Curley Hallmuun!", "F##k you, Mike Bugar", and my favorite, "Get 'em off yer chin, Curley!" over and over and over. They became regular sayings between me and my friends for years.

And a female SID intern. Curley liked the ladies.

What I don't understand is why did they reciprocate? He wasn't attractive, he was clearly mildly retarded, he wasn't making that much money, and his teams were a joke. What college age girl gets in to bed with that?

Curley apparently has some amount of game. Just not in a football coaching context.

I was at his last game against Southern Miss... Horrible... We basically sat wherever we wanted... The stadium was a ghost town by halftime....

It was so bad, I didn't bother to go to the game or even listen to it on the radio. Only LSU game I can recall like that.

I remember watching Curley coach at Southern Miss, but had never heard him speak. After watching his introductory press conference, I knew we were in trouble. The thing is, I think LSU used a search firm who recommended Curley. I haven't trusted search firms since.

More to that story and I got it from former kicker Pedro Suarez, who after having his bandana soiled by the coach who wiped his arse with it, threw his helmet at Hallman narrowly missing his head. Suarez then walked off the practice field with Hallman yelling at him he was through at LSU. Hours later Suarez and Hallman meet in his office to discuss details of the kicker's finish at LSU. The two ended up fighting on the floor of Hallman's office before coaches broke it up. The next day a press release identified Suarez as "regrettably" leaving due to "a bad back," written by Sports Information at the request of Hallman and blessing of Suarez. Crazy, but true.

I don't care if true or not that is hilarious.

Looking back, I can't blame Pedro. He was repeatedly ridiculed in front of the entire team several times; one vivid memory is Hallman jumping up and down with a broom trying to block his kicks in practice after a blocked kick against Bama. At least he had the balls to stand up for himself.

This can be directed attributed to the retarded fall camp schedule that forced players to have IVs regularly and some to go to the hospital.

Yep it was headed up by long time Cowboys GM Gil Brandt. I would bet anything that fricker recommended him because he has some kind of A&M connection and Curly is one of his boys.

That dumb son of bitch put the team on the practice field straight off the plane when they returned from A&M. The 1991 game where the field temp was like 140 degrees. Its a wonder he never killed anyone.

I remember that game against DiNardo. They were on the 1 yard line about to score and fumbled. Wayne Williams returned it into Vandy territory and we ran out the clock--16-14.

One of my favorite games of my young fandom came later against Kentucky. We won 29-26 when Todd Kinchen went off--had a TD catch and a punt return TD.

Loup to Kinchen--still my favorite QB/WR combo in LSU history.

Imagine Chad Loup on this team.

I have a funny story! I have several friends who are my age that played for Hallman at LSU. One of them told me during one of Hallman's first practices he called the team together to discuss the issues discussed here....earings, facial hair etc. When the team gathered they removed thier helmets. LSU's kicker at the time was Juan Betanzos and when he removed his helmet he was wearing a doo rag. Hallman sees him and yells take off that ****ing Doo rag. Juan smiles uncertain if hes serious. Hallman walks over to Betanzos pulls his pants down, rips the Doo rag off his head and wipes his arse with it. Then pulls his pants back up and hands the Doo rag back to him and continues on as if nothing has happened. This has been confirmed by my other friends who played for Hallman.
