The book says it shouldn't be done, but plenty of people do it. Should I?

You are going to lose power out there and not know it...

Freezers and refrigerators are designed to operate in 70 degree environments and struggle when operated outdoors. Appliance life will be affected and it will use more power, but it will work fine.

I have had a small chest freezer in the garage for 14 years with no issue. I now have had a fridge next to it for about 2 years with no issue.

I've seen a freezer work outside at a camp in cocodrie for years (bait and ice freezer). Looks like absolute shite and I'm sure it will last much less than half the life of a freezer inside, but it's still kicking after 4 or 5 years of staring at the saltwater marsh. And it was a hand-me-down as well, so no telling how old it was to begin with.

We've had an ice maker in an uncontrolled climate for 3 or 4 years near salt water,
happy happy.

Just make sure it isn't on a GFCI and you'll be ok.
