Buying cell phone outright

Is this better than getting locked in with contracts?

There aren't really any "contracts" anymore, but to answer your question yes. The get-around to contracts by carriers is having you sign an agreement to pay monthly for a phone over a certain period of time without being able to pay it off early.

Its also an intrest free loan. What do you have against free money?

Retail price vs market price is the problem, not the financing.
I'm curious if I purchase my own phone, will AT&T increase my monthly "fee" from $15 to $40?

There are so many great "mid-range" phones these days, it makes a lot of sense to just buy one outright, especially if you have AT&T or TMobile.
Verizon and Sprint can be a little trickier due to CDMA compatibility, but there are still good options.

I'm surprised the Moto X Pure doesn't get mentioned more on here. It is compatible with all of the major carriers and starts at $400. I have a co-worker with one that loves it. It's my main target if/when I have to upgrade from my G3.

nope. I brought my own phone to ATT. My device fee is $15.

No, I just did this. Got really PO'ed when they added the $15 to my wife and son last year when they got new phones and I didn't catch it. Amazon had a Moto X for $100 off a few weeks ago so I jumped on it. Not the flashiest phone in the world, but it does what I need

Give swappa a try, I've bought several phones from there for use on Verizon. Big fan.
