It's not somewhat tainted, IMO. It's full blown tainted.

What was the reason for the split? Which side was asking for it?

The public schools wanted it, primarily Dutchtown. The public schools were tired of losing to the likes of John Curtis and Evangel year after year, so they took their ball and went home like the giant pussies they are.

Don't private school teams like CHS now have to compete against John Curtis and Evangel? If so, one could argue that the competition is stronger than before IMO.
