Supposedly the rebels were shooting the soldiers as they floated down. That's not too cool. At least the stuff we give Turkey works and they know how to work it.

Looks like the Rebels also shot down a Russian helicopter sent out on a rescue mission for the pilot(s).
And they used an American made missle to do it.
And Putin is raisng hell on Turkey.
Today's tragic event will have serious consequences for Russian-Turkish relations,"
And NATO is holding a meeting at the request of Turkey.
NATO calls 'extraordinary meeting' after Turkey downs Russian jet

A downed pilot isn't the same as a paratrooper in regards to the Law of Armed Conflict. It's legal to shoot a paratrooper and illegal to shoot an distressed pilot.
I highly doubt any other country would follow such laws, but the US does.
