Another horrible comparison. Poker is Poker and has been the same for 100s of years. Gaming is different in that there are new games released every year and new updates for old games constantly released. There is always fresh content for people to consume/watch.

I think skateboarding and bmx are a better comparison. People thought those were just a fad back in the 70s and 80s.

But watching people play is only fun for a very short period of time. Anybody can play these games, it's not like football where there are real restraints to the average fan going out on the field. People will get tired of this pretty quick.

Plenty of games require serious amounts of time to get where these guys are when you watch them on the internet.

I basically have zero time to play video games but I will occasionally get on twitch.tv and watch people play to see what the new games are like. Specifically end-game content

Anybody can play basketball but not everyone can play it professionally. That's the difference. These people are pro gamers because they are better at their chosen game than other people are. By your standards, no one should watch the NBA because everyone has a hoop in their driveway.

I remember when the Revielle was a descent paper when I was at LSU.

What was the name of the fat dude that used to write the funny op-ed articles? I think his first name was Jay...

I am far removed from being a student at LSU, but it seems the Revielle is complete shite. I don't remember it being that bad when I was in college.

A few weeks ago, a revielle article proposed LSU tear down Tiger Stadium and move it away from campus because of the traffic problems

It's almost like reading the onion

No. Not everyone has a hoop and nine willing participants in their driveway. The difference in playing a basketball game at home and in an arena is huge. The difference between playing streetfighter at home or in an arena isn't that big. I can have the exact answer experience as the "athletes" whenever I choose to. That kinda takes away the appeal of watching it.

You don't get the level of pro gamers overnight. Saying you'd have the same experience as a pro gamer is like me saying I could go one on one with a buddy in basketball and its just like Lebron vs Curry.

Not really considering you aren't playing it against the other best players in the world for millions in prize money. Not even remotely the same.

Of course the prize money wouldn't be there but I could certainly find comparable competition if I was so inclined.

My point is the difference between me throwing the football in the back yard and me playing NFL football is huge, unbelievably huge, so huge that I'm resigned to the fact that I'll never know any experience like that. The difference between playing a video game at home and a video game at a competition is a real difference but not that unimaginable. So there's no huge disconnect between the fan and the performer so the appeal won't last.

The biggest difference in video games, is that I can watch the professionals play. See a amazing juke, move, combination.

Then log in at try it in my own games.

Thats a HUGE difference, watching games, learning from the pro's, and then doing it one your own is HUGELY satisfying.

I cant watch Brady go ham on the Dolphins, then go out back and throw a 45 yard perfect spiral for a TD. I can however, log on, pick Terrorblade, split-morph-manta-and destroy 3 people, sunder-split, destroy two More and RAMPAGE!!!
