I am 50 plus and feel threatened by you. Can you please post a picture of your hands?

Had this phone twit checked the deputy's hands, all of this could have been avoided. She would have known it was time to get to steppin'.

I haven't been following this thread closely (just browsed the last few pages) and felt the urge to reply to your comment about officers only being trained to apply force when feeling threatened.
It's news to me that this officer was fired. Was he terminated, or suspended, maybe placed on administrative leave pending an investigation?

I will have to look further into it, but off the cuff, I would guess that someone in his chain of command caved to "social" pressure.

That's exactly the mindset that causes problems in today's society. Person trolls for attention/reaction, they get said reaction and are glorified for it.

Found a great post on the whole issue with regards to the cop. I personally think the teacher was more to blame if the student was simply just surfing the Internet on her phone (not confirmed)

I believe there have been one or two other videos released as well showing her strike the officer at least once. Does that warrant the rest of the interaction by the officer, no probably not, although without seeing the entire interaction from the very start of the officer's involvement - I believe that point is debatable.

I would then like to propose a situation...the "unruly student". Maybe it is just rhetorical food for thought, but anyways...

If you are tasked with "keeping the peace" in a setting like this, and you are called over to "Room 201" for an unruly student disrupting class...what do you do when you arrive? The teacher/ administrator wants them removed from class because of their behavior and has surpassed what the school faculty is allowed to or willing to handle...
-Ask them to leave the class with you? Probably safe to assume that is a reasonable action.

-The student then either tells you to kick rocks, or just doesn't react. What now? Escalate: command to leave classroom. ...probably still safe to assume this is reasonable as well.

-The student again tells you to frick off (verbal noncompliance), or just doesn't do anything (passive resistance). What now? Would you be doing your job, the reason you were hired, by just throwing your hands up, saying "Well, ya got me there!" And walking away? Should you just continue issuing commands/requests with no intention to enforce them? Remember, there is in fact a law being broken, that of Disturbing Schools. If that student is 17 or older, an arrest can and should be made at this point - the time for an alternative resolution passed when the student refused to cooperate.

-You then escalate again, using physical control techniques, i.e. physically escorting the subject from the classroom. This is usually around the time that cameras come out, by the way, and also when the fight begins.

-What do you do when the student begins actively resisting, and maybe even attempting or actually striking you?

Regardless, if you use any physical force...you very well may end up on the Internet, or on the news. You followed your department policy, and your state's law....yet the rest of the populace will spend the next few weeks armchair quarterbacking and talking about how it "should have" happened, police brutality, rabble rabble rabble....
I'm glad it's not me though...phew!

I'm sure Sheriff Lott is saying and doing what he needs to do to placate all of the SJW's and media that have been salivating over the incident.
From what I have just read, Ben Fields has not been terminated & the FBI will be investigating.

I don't think Fields will be charged with a crime.

Internal investigation determined he failed to follow protocol and used excessive force. The problem with this thread is that people are polarized on this issue and fail to see that both parties, the girl and the cop, were counts and douche bags respectively. It's pretty simple.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A South Carolina sheriff says he has fired a school officer after video showed him flipping a teen backward out of her desk and tossing her across a classroom.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said Wednesday that Senior Deputy Ben Fields has been fired. He had been a school resource officer at Spring Valley High School.

Shrubber,
Here is the article I read. It says he is currently on unpaid leave.
There are also several videos in this article. One of which, I haven't watched yet.
Like I said earlier, I am sure the Sheriff is saying and doing what he feels pressured to do.

He was fired this evening.

Is Lt. Tiller still employed? The guy that murdered the kid for trying to run him over despite the fact he wasn't in front of the car.

Richland County has 87 school resource officers, Lott said, and the "actions by Deputy Fields was not typical of the job I expect them to do."

Fields did wrong and was fired for his actions, Lott said.

But the student must shoulder responsibility for the disruptive behavior that escalated to the officer being called in, the sheriff said.

"When a classroom is disrupted by a student, that disrupts the education process and the students can't learn and the teachers can't teach," Lott said. "We have to have discipline in our schools."

What the student did does not justify the officer's actions, the sheriff said, but she must take responsibility for her role.

"We must not lose sight that this whole incident started by this student," he said. "She is responsible for initiating this action. Some responsibility falls on her."

Wtf are you you talking about?

1)I Said handle this after class when she doesn't comply

2) They shall know she is suspended when the school notifies the parents / she isn't allowed on the bus etc.... by mail phone or however the hell they notify parents of suspensions.

And what's with the snide remarks.

If the parents can afford to buy the child a smart phone I'm sure they can be contacted as well.

But shes Black & you make some silly presumptions about her parents / finances.

I'm sorry if you feel that if little girls don't comply that it's okay to get physical with them.

Good lesson to teach the other kids on how to handle unruly women.

Wow. You should never go full retard. But there you have it. Full retard.

No no no. She punched at the cop after he grabbed her. All 3 videos are very clear. He grabbed her around the shoulder, she punches up at him as she is about to be flipped out of the desk.
