What the student did does not justify the officer's actions, the sheriff said, but she must take responsibility for her role.

100% my stance.

The student, the teacher, and the cop all share responsibility. Maybe not all the same amount, but definitely all share it.

I assume the cop has no authority to suspend/expel the student, so if the teacher was going to get outside reinforcements, he should have called the principal/disciplinary who could see with their own eyes what the child was doing and have her suspended/expelled on the spot.

I am sure the teacher didn't think the cop was going to react the way he did, but in hindsight, that teacher has to know that the cop didn't have the power to do much else. He didn't have administrative power.. he only has law enforcement power. I don't blame him for not thinking about that at the time, but it is definitely something to think about going forward. What did he really think the cop was going to do? I assume he just thought that calling the cop would scare the student into doing what he asked.

No no no. She punched at the cop after he grabbed her. All 3 videos are very clear. He grabbed her around the shoulder, she punches up at him as she is about to be flipped out of the desk.

We should slow down the video like they do in football games on TV and then replay it 17 times so we can all talk to the TV about what we think the call should be

You continue to place your ignorance on the SROs role in public schools on full display.

I have seem some mention of the officer's reputation and history, but no details about the disposition and reputation of the student.

Does anyone here have any info?

You are being ignorant (correct use of the phrase)

The teacher did call an administrator (think it was the vice principal that showed up) and both the teacher, the principal and Leon Lott said initially that the officer reacted appropriately.

It was only with the social media response and the mainstream media picking up the story because of it that this incident has gone national and resulted in the spineless Leon Lott firing the officer.

WWE needs to hire him for a 30 second spot.

Officer should have walked in, told girl to get up and leave, then shrugged his shoulders to teacher and left when the girl refused. He had no chance the second he touched her. This is a school problem, not a law enforcement problem.

this is definitely the stupidest response i've ever read on the internet.

I am the one that said it. It was in response to one of the many "what if's" being thrown out there. They were getting more outlandish and unrealistic. I decided to join in what if game.

Sorry you were stuck on checkers and missed it.

His being fired had very little to do with the incident. He was sacrificed on the altar of political correctness and arse covering by the elected sheriff.

Year old article that sheds light on the DOJ and its stance on school discipline

quote:

Just a few days ago, Attorney General Eric Holder ridiculously informed the public that black students were being punished more often and “harsher” than white students. He then made demands to change schools current zero-tolerance policies in order to fight the current racial discrimination of students via punishment or suspension. After hearing his obnoxious claims, Educational experts had no choice but to dispute the inaccurate claims.

quote:

Joy Pullmann, managing editor of School Reform News stated that, “It’s ridiculous to assign quotas for discipline based on race If we did that, for one thing, we’d have to believe that Asian students are severely under-disciplined,”– I don’t know about you, but that sounds downright racist (hopefully that doesn’t get back to Holder).

quote:

Andrew Coulson, director of the Center for Educational Freedom at the Cato Institute, stated that it would in turn have a disruptive outcome on classrooms by allowing already troublesome students to stay in the classroom. He clarified by stating, “The kinds [of kids] who just want to be free to learn in peace, who are not disruptive, have their education injured by the disruptive kids who remain in the classroom.”

quote:

Pullmann agreed by later expressing the concern that after a while, “Kids of the favored race know they can get away with more, so they misbehave more, and the well-behaved kids lose out on instruction because the teacher is busy trying to manage unruly students she can’t send to the principal’s office.”

So what do we do as a society? How can we take our schools back?

Ummm read the story and watch the video instead of just spouting out stupidity. She attacked the cop first.

He could have easily held her on the floor and cuffed her once she was out of the chair, but he picks her up and throws her to the front of the room, what is your justification for that?

This could be the start of something great. A cop just got punished for excessive force and not following his training.

The girl should honestly just be thankful he didn't pull his firearm and shoot her when she "tried to hit him".. it would have been as justified as some of the recent high profile police killings.
