Because to take it a step further, they do use common sense when the penalty is pass interference in the endzone. Then it magically doesn't become half the distance but instead goes up to the 1 yard line.

I've always thought a fumble out of the end zone should be the offense's ball back at the defense's 20. Idk why but this always seemed fair. You go back a little because you fumbled but the defense doesn't just magically get the ball.
I've also always WHOLE-HEARTIDLY agreed that the half the distance rules are idiotic. As someone said, the defense can jump offsides all day long with their reprocussions decreasing each time, but the offense is just killed if they have a holding penalty.

different standards for running the ball across vs catching it in the end zone.
What's stupid about this? Folks go full retard about catch rules in the end zone for some reason. When you're running it in you already have possession and only need to break the plane of the goal line. When catching it, you might already be in the end zone but you have to establish the catch first.
Not that hard.

Why do offenses get a first down on 5 yard penalties, when they need 10-20 or even 30 yards to go ? That is the dumbest rule. I don't see defenses getting 4rth downs because pf a hold.
That is the rule I hate the most. Defensive holdings being automatic first downs. Especially considering how ticky tack they are calling it, the defenders can't really do anything after 5 yards or they will likely get called for holding. It's ridiculous they reward automatic first downs with it.

Not a dumb rule. When you put it in their end zone, it's their ball.

The defense doesnt get the turnover anywhere else on the field unless they recover it. Why should their own endzone be this magic turnover territory. SO SO DUMB.
Totally disagree.

The logic of "well the offense shouldnt fumble" doesnt hold water because they are not held to that standard for any of the other 100 yards.
It's a great, merciless rule.

What's wrong with keeping the rules consistent?
If the ball is downed in the end zone. That means the ball belongs to someone.

Erm, that is legit. A holding call on the 4 yard line shouldn't result in a safety.

I've always had a problem with the offense being able to fumble the ball forward. It pisses me off when the offense fumbles on the other teams 5 and recovers it in the end-zone for a touchdown.

I still hate the PI spot foul
I honestly don't mind the spot PI foul. I mean if you really think about it, if a corner is getting beat deep and he knows it, he can trip the guy up knowing that he's only giving up 15 yards instead of a touchdown.
Posted on 10/6/15 at 9:25 am to alajones
quote:Yeah I agree with that. If they insist on favoring the spot of the foul then the pass interference penalty should be spot of the foul or half the distance to the goal, whichever is less.
This right here is "The Worst Rule in Football".

quote:If you don't give the automatic first down, then the defense can intentionally commit 5 yard penalties five plays in a row, and hope that the refs miss it once. The idea is that most defensive penalties deprive the offense of the chance to gain first down yardage. If you don't award an automatic first down for certain defensive penalties, then you are encouraging intentional penalties. That's never good.
No reason a five yard penalty on 3rd and 30 should be an automatic first down.

What 5 yard penalties result in 1st down? I thought they resulted in replay of down

quote:No doubt the endzone is special. But is it so special that 1 inch should be the difference between keeping possession with a prime scoring opportunity, vs. losing possession AND essentially being penalized 20 yards?
The end zone is special just as a basic rule of the game.
