How do we feel about the one game Wild Card playoff in MLB?

I love that there are more teams that have a chance at the postseason, but I feel like a one game playoff is more akin to the one game play-in game in the NCAA Tournament. 162 games is a long, long season to have hinge on a one-game playoff. Should MLB explore the Wild Card as a 5 game series?
I've also found it strange in the major sports like the NFL and MLB that teams with lesser records will host playoff series. Just for instance, the best three teams in the National League are the St. Louis Cardinals, Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs. In fact, those are currently the three teams with the top three records in all of baseball, in that order.
I found it strange (although it's been the case for as long as I remember) that the Seattle Seahawks (7-9) hosted the Saints (11-5) in 2011.
It is just odd that two of the top three teams in baseball have to play a one game playoff to keep going in October. I'm trying my best to separate myself being a Cubs and Saints fan from this issue and I feel like if this was the case--say, in the NL East or the AFC South, whatever--I'd feel the same exact way.

It's kinda stupid, but if they're gonna allow two wild cards, there's really no other way.

I'm with you. I like the idea in principle but it needs some tweaking. Fortunately this year it will work out pretty fairly, but there is a chance for some nightmare scenarios that are stupid.
For example, it's not out of the question for a team with a 98-64 record to be in the WC Play-in game with a team who's record is 86-76. If the 90 win team loses one game, their season is done. That just seems unfair.

I like the idea, but would be more in favor of a 3 game series rather than 5. One thing I like about the MLB playoffs is they don't drag on forever and ever amen. The NBA playoffs are awful for that reason.

I'm torn on this. Mets and Dodgers are at 89 and 88 wins , Cubs and Pirates are at 93 and 96. Mets clinched the NLDS what, like a week ago?
So they get to coast the last few weeks and rest up arms. Huge benefit.
Flip side is without the play-in game, Cubs aren't even in the playoffs this year. So I'm on board with the WC2 team. I don't see another way to structure it other than a playin.
I think the easy change is reseeding after the WC game based on record. It just makes more sense to give the best teams in the league a chance to go at it for the World Series.

It's unfortunate for the Cubs and Pirates this year, but the only way to fix that would be to get rid of divisions. Or if they didn't do that, shorten the season (maybe 20 or 30 games) and have a 5 game WC series or something along those lines.

Best of 3 would be great for the wild card and then the winner can move on, makes it more difficult for the wild card but that makes it a bit more fair. GO CUBBIES

BEst of 3 in the WC would be the most fair way to do it. Unfortunately if the series is pushed to 3 games then that is using up a lot of pitching for which ever team is to win and go on to the DS. For that reason a 1 game series is better.
It's tough to come up with a perfect way to please everyone in the wildcard now that there are 2 WC spots.
The 1 game WC is awesome to watch....as long as your team isn't in it...then it's just really stressful and could really piss you off if you lose.

I love it this year.
I don't really see any other way to do this without causing a unfair delay to the division winner waiting to play the wild card series winner. As it is now, the season ends Sunday, and the Cardinals don't start the NLDS until Friday. If it was a 3 game series, they may not start until Sunday or Monday. That's a long time off.
Then again, baseball teams aren't built to win one game, so this playoff goes completely against what teams are doing all year, and even into the playoffs. But, the counter to that is just win your division, and you don't have to worry about it.

Honestly, at first I didn't like it, but it has grown on me. It makes winning your division super important which I like. The excitement for the wild card game is like an immediate Game 7.

I like it... you have 162 games to win your division. If you dont, you had 162 games...

I like it. Emphasizes winning your division.
I understand the "Cubs and Pirates have better records than Mets/Dodgers" argument but it fails because the schedules are not balanced. Each team plays 76 games against its own division. If the schedules were all the same across the league it would be a valid argument but at that point there would be no purpose for divisions.
I still think we are headed toward 32 teams, with two 8-team divisions in each league where the division winners and 2 wild cards get into the playoffs. That, or four 4-team divisions in each league where the 4 division winners and 2 wild cards get in like the NFL.

Terrible idea for a number of reasons. At the very least, they should change the format so a division winner with a worse record than a wild card team has to be in the play-in game.
It's unfair that a Pirates team that might win 98, 99 games has to play the play-in game.

I mean this year could be an outlier that happens once every 20 years, but it's ridiculous that the 2nd or 3rd best record in baseball will be out after one game.
It's even more ridiculous when you look at how both teams performed against the NL West and NL East. The Dodgers and Mets should be playing it.
But I'm just a salty Pirates fan shitting in my pants about the fact that Arrietta is pitching the WC game.

Wild Card: 3 games
Division: 5 games
Championship: 7 games
World Series: 7 games
Division: 5 games
Championship: 7 games
World Series: 7 games

It shouldn't exist but I would be much more tolerant of it if it was a 3 game series. 5 games is too long to make the other teams wait but this is baseball, a one game playoff is ludicrous unless we are talking about ties

As a Stros fan, I could be a direct beneficiary of it and hate it. It's stupid and pollutes the game. 1-game playoffs are for tiebreakers, not arbitrarily created postseason nonsense.
The monstrosity of the 2012 Braves-Cardinals game was an insult to the game (and I don't like the Barves at all).

Kind of out there, but I've said many times that it should be a three game series with the first two at the home team and game three the very next day at the the other team's venue.
