It winds up being the rest of the season essentially.

Washington Post

quote:

The notion that Harper is a malcontent or a cocky hothead or a threat to the game’s integrity is, to borrow a phrase, tired. He plays as hard as any teammate would expect – with the apparent exception of Papelbon, a guy who’s played about 1,200 fewer innings than him this season.

One insane thing about Sunday is that Harper did run out that pop-up. He muttered in frustration, tossed his bat, shook his head and trotted down the line. He reached the base. In Game 155 of a mathematically dead season, that constitutes running it out. That counts.

quote:

There is now a new answer to that question. This season, Harper could become the third player since 2000 to lead the majors in batting average, on-base percentage and slugging. The other two are Barry Bonds and Miguel Cabrera.

The Nationals place more on his shoulders than any player, a burden he embraces. He accepts media requests. He signs autographs before games. He is every kid’s favorite player, and he accommodates as many as he can, especially ones in dire situations. Each month, as part of his Harper’s Heroes program, he hosts a group of kids with cancer at Nationals Park.

Such a thug that guy is.

I'm still laughing at the guys that are taking Pap's side

I'd love to see the reaction of a newly signed free agent getting in Tom Brady's face for not running full speed at a DB who picked off a pass and choking him.

This happens in nearly every single game, from opening day to game 162. Glad Pap got suspended and I hate the Nationals.

Exactly. The irrational hate for Harper by posters in this thread is unreal.

It's mainly because of stuff they heard or read about when he was 16 or 17, most likely.

Ken Rosenthal

quote:

So while we’re on the subject, how good of a baserunner is Bryce Harper, anyway?

Pretty darned good, according to the metrics.

Harper leads the Nationals in extra-base taken rate at 57.1 percent and is tied for 16th in the majors, minimum 400 plate appearances, according to baseball-reference.com and research by MLB Network’s Marc Adelberg.

In other words, any talk about Harper’s lack of hustle is misplaced; no player on his team takes extra bases at a higher rate.

quote:

Rangers manager Jeff Banister has a fascinating view of baserunning – he says it is the only part of the game that a player can “give back” to his teammates.”

Beat out a ball, and your teammate will bat with a man on base. Advance to second on a ball in the dirt, and your teammate will hit with a man in scoring position. Go first to third with less than two outs, and your teammate gets a chance to gain an RBI.

The thing about Harper is that, according to the metrics, he essentially does all of those things better than his teammates.

If only we were talking about that today.

Papelbon might be the single worst midseason acquisition in baseball history. Storen has melted down and now Papelbon is taking shots at the franchise.

When his suspension ends, they should just send his game checks to his house and tell him to not bother showing up. Then, the Nats should fire Williams for letting the issue get this big.

Agree on both. frick the nats, but they have to protect the franchise all star right now.
