I have had a new Colorado for over 3 months now.
JMHO having owned both the Tacoma and the Colorado, both V-6,4-wheel drive versions.
If you want crappy gas mileage, a terrific engine with a chassis that is made for four wheeling go with the Taco.
Of course expect to change the water pump at 120K miles (no biggie), un-fixable driveline vibrations if you put ANYTHING larger than the stock tires on. Potential driveline shudder at low rpm that is roughly the same as driving a manual with a clutch thats gone. Oh and mileage that sucks for a V-6 vehicle, even brand new. I won't even get into the whole frame-rust issues that have been an ongoing issure for many. But resale is the best of any vehicle out there,FWIW.
With the Colorado you get a world -class interior, terrific ride (not quite as good as a full-size, but close). A gutsy engine, transmission that just needs the newest factory reflash to update the better transmission shift points. Better ride, more towing capacity and as you said before, the ability to actually park in a spot w/o packing it in like a sardine into a can.
As for mpg I get roughly 17-18 city and 24-26 highway. Thats driving 75-79 miles an hour mind you. Ain't a full-size made (except maybe the diesel Dodge) ,that will touch that.
Drove out to Texarkana from Upstate,S.Carolina Labor Day wknd. For the trip averaged 24.8mpg.
Made the same exact trip with my Tacoma back in 2010 and averaged 19.8.
5 mpg may not sound like much but thats 105 miles more range at hwy speeds.
As for price I paid 34,5K for the V-6,Z-71 with bose/nav and donut-maker.

I've had my Colorado about three months too and it is as good as advertised. I got the LT crew cab with V6, 2wd and the 6' bed.
It hauled everything I needed to set up the deer camp last weekend and got 26.5 mpg doing it. I find that it rides as well as my old Silverado and handles better. I test drove a new Silverado too and just like the Colorado better. Similarly equipped the negotiated price difference was about 5K. Sticker difference was about 10K but they negotiate more on the big trucks.
Incentives on the Colorado are not there yet, but I joined a credit union to get about $1,500 off.

Good lord. For $35k you can get a 2014 Tundra, less than 10k miles, 4X4, crew cab SR5 with options.
ETA
Here's a few examples of ten times the truck for approximately the same price:

Great info thank you!
I drive 1000 miles a month to and from work so fuel economy is a top priority, hence me looking at mid sized.
I can't find anyone that says they get 28-30 in their full size trucks. The guys at work all say get the full size as well...
By the way I have a 2008 Nissan rogue with 138k miles for sale, I will give you a great deal
