I'm a Star Wars nerd though I have watched my share of Star Trek in most of its variants and I love the original LOTR trilogy. I've dipped my toe in those pools but my impression is that Doctor Who people are the worst.

1. Star Trek
2. Dr. Who
3. Star Wars
4. LOTR
Dr. Who is balanced out by the enormous population of hipsters that watch it. Star Trek is almost straight nerd.

Well, Star Wars isn't even really on the same level as the other two in terms of nerdiness . I love Star Wars more but it's not exactly a technical obsession like Star Trek fans learning Klingon or lotr fans learning elvish.
I'd have to go with Star Trek because so much of it is scientific and ideas for people to nerd out on. Lotr has very technical stuff but most of it is in the apendixes or not really integral. It's also a bit more conceded with world changing dramatic events which are a little bit more tangible.

I do find Doctor Who fans to be real pompous. I think they have this "I am so cultured" attitude because they watch the more off beat science fiction show.
This isn't really exclusive to Doctor Who fans, it seems to be most people that claim they only watch United Kingdom programming.

I work at Initech and I do not consider myself a p****.
But to answer your question, I'd say Star Trek has the most hardcore nerds

You're talking about fanboys?
Star Trek by far.
LOTR would be next.

Back on topic,
I do want to take this moment to say that even though I'm not one to immerse myself whole heartedly into one topic, one world, one property and nearly live it, I totally respect those who do. It's nerdy, but that kind of passion is kind of cool to see. Writing fan fiction, creating games, playing RPGs, learning fake languages, I enjoy the fact that literature, film, and other mediums can have THAT kind of impact on people.
And also, talking with people who go that deep is kind of fun, they make worlds seem alive sometimes. And that's kind of awesome.

There's a difference between nerds and geeks.
Alot of people in this thread need to learn it.
In terms of my personal favorite:
Wars
Trek
Lotr
Never seem Who.
In terms of full blown geekdom today.
Trek
Lotr
Wars
Although Star Wars could claim that top spot back after December.
