Hey guys. I get alot of bad press because I go to Southern, but I honestly love the experience.

My main reason for going to Southern was due to the fact that my GPA was not stellar enough to go to an elite university and Southern has a respected engineering program.

But my question to you is: what would you have done if you had less than a 3.0 in Physics. You may judge me, but given my circumstances I think I made a great decision.

Also, for you education buffs...its not as easy to find a teaching job as you might think. And I did not want to do that anyway.

Still could have gotten into Ole Miss more than likely. Why didn't you apply there?

You need to take comments on here less seriously/personally.

Take it from me. I'm the expert on this.

I think he's slowly getting to the point where he admits he's been trolling us hard for about a month. He never would have admitted he transferred to Southern because it would help his low GPA. 3 weeks ago Southern was still a "high level academic institution" in his eyes

Calling it now, 2 weeks from now we'll know this guy is one really good troll on Southern and we'll all get a good laugh out of it

To be honest, I looking into several option other than just engineering (med phys, dosiometry, geology, Finance). To be honest, I only really looked for engineering in Louisiana due to financial reasons.

I checked ABET for LA and made a call between McNeese, ULL and Southern.

I got accepted into all 3 (actually 2, but I was about to apply to McNeese until SU accepted me)

Is it really that easy to work in oil. I have heard multiple comments about this.

The only thing they push in Physic majors face is research or teaching. Although simplistically true, the internet has fortunately dispelled this as narrow-minded. But oil field work is not a commonly mentioned option.

I had less than a 3.0 for my undergraduate degree, and I got some experience under my belt and got one of the highest scores on the GRE in the country. That helped me get into graduate school on fellowship.

GPA doesn't matter that much. You may not be able to land a great job coming out of school, but you can get something. Once you get something, make it your life's goal to make up for your low GPA. Give your future company a reason to hire you. In fact, make it so that your resume is so good that they can't afford to not hire you. (double negatives FTW).

And you get a lot of bad press because you worry all the damn time. I wouldn't be surprised if you're really Volod's mother using his account to post your worries to the world.

I would probably go on the internet and constantly try to justify to myself that southern is a good place to be.

Southern is a very bad institution, especially for engineering. I've met EE graduates from there who couldn't tell me what Ohm's Law is.

I return emailed a Nigerian prince with whom I have a pressing business deal brewing (involving lottery funds to be exported from Nigeria) and he was QUITE complimentary of Southern University's Engineering Program to me.

So there's that.

Same here, actually. As a Physics major my GPA was truly horrid (slightly under 2.5) but got a 1500+ GRE and was able to get into grad school anyway and took it from there.

I graduated LSU with a 2.4 in physics. Before graduation I went and talked to the graduate admissions officer for a couple of engineering programs. The EE officer listened to my story, was a frick off but never dropped or failed a physics class and worked in physics lab (CAMD) for 3 years...took upper level physics with free electives, and asked him to talk to the Associaye Dean of the College of Basic Sciences about me. He called in front of me and the guy said to give me a shot...he did.

He made me take Circuits, Electronics, Digital Logic, Field Theiry, and Solid State the semester after I graduated...he said if you make a C don't come back and talk to me. Made As and Bs.

He made me take Electronics II with Ajmera that summer...I got the second highest grade in the class and when it came time for me to register for grad school Ajmera walked me down to the Admissions officer's office and said let this guy in.

I had a letter from CAMD saying they'd let me do research for the PhD candidates, expose their projects at the beam lines, and I started with a professors project he had waiting.

I've worked as an engineer since graduation, through a few different fields.

I work for a PE mechanical engineer now and produce all sorts of reports. At a rocket launch facility today taking UT measurements to ensure the piping they used after last years explosion is to spec...and conforms to the assumptions we made in the remaining life and Code compliance calculations.
