So Marvel has a big event going on right now to really shake up how it's comics are laid out. A lot of big changes happening, see good overviews:

LINK

or

LINK

or

LINK

Things like the new Falcon as-Captain America and Lady Thor are sticking., while Marvel seems to be reconnecting other Universes into the main one (Miles Morales hopping over to whatever the new Universe is called), while possibly, and this is still a big theory, giving the X-Men their own Universe.

When this all started, some people said it was to align this to the MCU. But given the announcements, that isn't the case.

What's super interesting, especially from the perspective of Marvel as entertainment comapny and not "Comic Book" Company, is broadening appeal significantly.

More female headliners than ever before: Ms. Marvel, Silk, Spider-Woman, and the all-female A-Force. A big shift towards an even bigger cosmic Universe: Guardians, Utimates, Starlord, Venom, etc. Old Man Logan becoming THE canon Wolverine. All fun stuff.

What I'm excited for: Uncanny Avengers, Dr Strange, The Vision, Uncanny Inhumans, Starlord, Guardians, among some others.

The big questions are:

1. How many people think this is a permanent change?
2. How does this effect the MCU if at all?
3. Is splitting the X-Men and the Avengers Universes make sense? (The persecution angle in the X-Books did lose steam over the years as there were always other supers running around.)

Anyway, nerdy thread, but have at it.

Is the split off of X-Men official? Pretty sure there is about to be a X-Men vs. Inhumans conflict(with Beast on the Inhumans side)

No, just a rumor given the announcements. In particular, 1 or 2 of the X-Books would be in their own universe, while Logan's team would still inhabit the Main U.

Also, we still have between 15 and 20 books left to be announced, there are quite a few missing pieces left.

every Carnage mini-series of the past decade has been phenomenal. cant wait for more.

honestly, the spider-verse stuff bores me to death. really "kitchy" idea thats been played out. ready for it to go away.

not sure about thisx-men split universe. uncanny avengers has quicksilver and deadpool in it. unless they are now cut out of mutants.

the inhumans and guardians books look interesting. a lot of these seem really hit or miss. probably wait for the reviews and see which ones are worth reading.

right now Jason Aaron's Thors book has been one of the best books of the year. its the wire meets Thor.

eta: i find it extremely interesting that Hickman, the guy crafting secret wars and the new universe, isnt slated on a single new title.

been well known that Hickman is taking a break from Marvel/superhero comics for awhile.

He's been building to this run since his initial F4/UF4 runs...so it is years in the making, he's written SO much.

Agree. And they are tripling down on Spider stuff, which is odd. The only one that looks really good is Spider-Gwen, and possibly Spider-Woman just given the talent behind the title.

True. And it looks like Johnny is an Inhuman, so I think they are shifting some heroes around in terms of origins.

I haven't given this a shot but I need to.

Yeah pregnant Spider-Woman looks cool...I have no interest in multiple Spider-Men like Miles Morales or whatever the clone's name is run around and have spidey-adventures.

Julia Carpenter is the only other exception to me besides Jessica Drew..and this is just because I read a lot of West Coast Avengers.

As for Johnny in the Inhumans/ Ben Grimm in the Guardians ...Ben makes sense going off into space....since Val and Franklin Richards are about to die (theory) he probably wants to get out.

As for Johnny it takes a special kind of guy to date your ex's (Crystal) sister Medusa who is separated from her husband. What a dickbag, lol.

Johnny Storm,as I've said before, is the walking STD in the Marvel Universe. If he doesn't suggest a 3 way with the two sisters, I'll be disappointed.

I'm interested in The Ultimates as well-Black Panther's new heavy hitting Avengeresque team.Blue Marvel will be in it. I'm all for more Black Superheroes in the forefront so they can stop with race baiting movie casting....

Totally Awesome Hulk looks fun.

I feel like Marvel is taking a lot of the big Avengers players off the board(Rogers is old, Stark is "poor", Odinson isn't worthy,Banner is just Banner,) the F4 are broken up and the leader of X-Men (Cyclops and Logan) are no longer around in the normal capacity.

Also, Star-Lord is off of Guardians, ruling Spartax.

Couldn't care less about the rest. Sounds stupid actually.

But Old Man Logan as canon means the villains win and Logan is the resistance. . .so I'm in.

But we still don't know who it is right?

Which is why I'm wondering if this will stick. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised either way. Can Marvel be more interesting without Steve Rogers as Cap, without a Banner-Hulk, a Tony Iron Man, etc.?

Even New 52, as much as it shook things up, pretty much kept players the same. Marvel's taking a big risk, and at least giving the impression that it's sticking, which, to me, is kind of cool. And I've liked comics for a long time, so this is kind of nuts.

I think they are doing a good job of introducing more diversity while also keeping the old school fans happy. You can do both, which I think everyone forgets. You can have "edgy" violent books and funny, quirky books. You can appeal to both girls and boys. It's always been a false choice.

Also, the initial announcement was not the whole line. Since then, they've announced a few more titles like Unbeatable Squirrel Girl and Star Brand. What I'm looking forward to:

New Avengers: Hawkeye stuck with a bunch of goof characters? And an AIM tie-in? Sign me up!

Ultimates: Thrilled to see both Captain Marvels on the team, and they have hinted that somehow Galactus will be a regular. Yeah, I'm curious.

Captain Marvel: Pretty much my favorite characters in the main Marvel universe. New creative team, as DeConnick ran her course.

Captain America: Sam Wilson is awesome. I'm in.

Ms. Marvel: The best new character in a decade. Her book is so much fun and I'm not quitting it now.

Spider-Man: I'll follow Bendis. Morales is a neat inversion of the Spidey mythos, but really, I just like Bendis as a writer.

Guardians of the Galaxy: See above.

Spider-Woman: Man, talk about blowback for the sexy butt cover.

Daredevil: Oh, look. Murdock again has an amazing writer on his book.

Howard the Duck: frick, yes!

Uncanny Inhumans: I'll admit, I'm intrigued by Beast and Human Torch with the Inhumans.

Karnak: Warren f'n Ellis.

Squadron Supreme: OK, this is intriguing. SS is Mark Gruewald's greatest work, and it even predates Watchmen as a deconstruction of the comic genre. Gru died almost 25 years ago, and his creations have largely been untouchable. I'm very curious what they do with his alt reality heroes, and it better be a fitting legacy to Gru.

Star Brand: You've got to be kidding me. Jim Shooter's infamous New Universe is coming back? Are they bringing back the Pitt? Star Brand is one of the most underrated titles in Maevel history, and I'm psyched for this.

Squirrel Girl: Because I like hats.

Man, a lot sure has changed since I quit comics around 1995. I'm totally lost with all this.

do you just read everything marvel puts out?

is there anything you dont seem excited for?

ive read comics what seems like forever. im betting half these books will feel like retreads but with new characters. thats what happened with DCs relaunch with maybe 3 exceptions (like snyder's batman).

benids was an amazing writer. i just dont see new ideas from him. his extremely heavy dialogue has gotten tiresome. his last arcs on ultimate spider-man were pretty bad. same with all new x-men. hopefully he gets his mojo back.

but to freaux's question on how long this will stay, probably a year or two. its comics. nothing stays forever and the normal characters always return. just gotta hope for a fun ride in between.

It's all the illusion of change. At the end of the day, the Avengers are Earth's Mightiest Heroes, the X-men are the ragged "hated" underdogs, and Captain America is all that's good about us. And so on.

I do think Marvel is trying to give some of their smaller characters are a bigger stage (and I forgot to list Black Knight and Moon Girl). They've been telling the same Iron Man story for 50 years. Let's give a new(er) character a try. If Marvel is lucky, maybe a few of these titles will stick like Ms. Marvel has, and they will be in the movies in 10 years.

But I think half of these books will fail (or just run their course and end -- as pumped as I am for Karnak, there's no way that has a long shelf life). As they get cancelled or writers move on, the bigger stars will move back into the spotlight.

But I think Secret Wars was necessary to essentially reboot the universe and get out from 50 years of complicated continuity. This is the reset button. DC did in the 80s with Crisis on Infinite Earths, at close to their 50th anniversary as well.

Well, it's 15 of 50 books I plan on reading, so no... it's not everything. I think X-Men has run its course for me. I'm pretty much done with them. I don't care about the Spidey-Verse (Jessica Drew predates that). I can hardly stand Deadpool. Pretty much anything to do with SHIELD or Iron Man bores me to tears. I'm not much on the big fighting books.

But I like the odd, quirky titles and this reboot is heavy on odd and quirky. They are bringing a lot of stuff from the back of the shelf to the front, and I couldn't be more excited. This is an old school nerd's dream: Squadron Supreme? Howard the Duck? Star-Brand? Karnak? These are 1970s/80s pulp heroes getting the red carpet treatment. Of course I'm excited for that stuff. I'll also read just about anything Ellis or Bendis does.

Also, Noelle Stevenson is under contract with Marvel after leaving Lumberjanes. I'll read whatever she writes, though she has no announced title yet.

agreed. the fact that they are leaving the younger versions mixed with the adult versions is really lame. super gimmicky and honestly doesnt make much sense. basically they realized the characters got screwed up so they reset by timetraveling them and ignoring the adult versions.

i can see that. as a kid of the 90s i get excited over those characters. all about nostalgia. i know nothing about karnak but as you said, warren ellis? yes, please. ill probably give it a few issues.

i guess im in the minority but i cannot stand dan slott on spidey. but hes been on there forever, so people must like him.

Chip Zdarsky is pretty highly thought of. I'll be checking this one out.

Butters and Fazekas, whose work I've liked since the TV show Reaper are writing this one. They are also the showrunners on Agent Carter.

Also, former WWE star CM Punk is a writer on the Drax series. It's not entirely a stunt choice, as he's written for books before and used to work at a comic shop and is a huge fan. But it's still a stunt in that if were any joe off the street, he wouldn't get that opportunity with as little in the portfolio as he has.
