Sorry if Germans...but what the hell...let the locals call it Denali if you want, but quit being so freakin' PC with everything.

Mt. McKinley to be renamed Denali

Meh, if it's what the Alaskans want, they should have it.

It was named McKinley by some guy from Ohio.

how is it PC? Alaska has been trying to change the name for years, it took the Department of Interior to do it.

It was called Denali before it was called Mt. McKinley, Alaskans have petitioned for it to be renamed back to Denali for decades, and yet you retards still find some reason to hate on this simply because "Obama"

I hate you people

It's pretty much known as Denali in the mountaineering world. I think it should definitely be Denali.

No problem with this. The people of Alaska want it that way...and it's not like McKinley discovered the mountain for the US or anything.

This has to be one of the worst, off-point thread titles I have ever seen.

It is the latest bid by the president to fulfill his 2008 campaign promise to improve relations between the federal government and the nation’s Native American tribes, an important political constituency that has a long history of grievances against the government.

quote:

Mr. Obama’s trip there starting on Monday will be his first major visit to the state, and he will become the first sitting American president to visit the Alaskan Arctic.

quote:

Mr. Obama has stepped up his engagement with Native Americans since June last year, when he visited Cannon Ball, N.D., in the ancestral lands of Chief Sitting Bull and took part in a powwow to honor American Indians who have served in America’s foreign wars. That was the first visit by a sitting president in 15 years to land under tribal jurisdiction.

“There’s no denying that for some Americans, the deck’s been stacked against them, sometimes for generations, and that’s been true of many Native Americans,” Mr. Obama said at the time. “But if we’re working together, we can make things better.”

I have always been against it being called "McKinley". I lived in Alaska, visited this mountain and have always respected the fact that its true name is Denali.

I fully support it being called Denali and completely doing away with the "McKinley" BS.

Denali has ALWAYS been its true name for centuries and I have never called it anything but that and have educated those who called it McKinley about it's true name.

Denali is an Athabascan word meaning “the high one” or “great one.

I am thrilled to hear that Denali is finally getting it's real name made official again.

Op, you sound like a true idiot:

quote:

Senator Lisa Murkowski, Republican of Alaska, introduced legislation in January to rename the peak, but Ohio lawmakers sought to block the move. In June, an Interior Department official said in testimony before Congress that the administration had “no objection” to Ms. Murkowski’s proposed change.

In a video released on Sunday, Ms. Murkowski cheered Mr. Obama’s decision.

“For generations, Alaskans have known this majestic mountain as ‘the great one,’” she said in the video, appearing in front of the snow-topped mountain, its peak reaching above the clouds. “I’d like to thank the president for working with us to achieve this significant change to show honor, respect and gratitude to the Athabascan people of Alaska.”
