No generation that makes a meme comparing a note for a boat and student loans should ever talk about financial literacy.

Some of the issues raised in this thread are extremely complex and are attributable to voters across a wide range of age groups.

Blaming them for delaying retirement to protect their family's financial security due to rising medical costs and increased longevity is asinine. There's not some kind of grand conspiracy among them to keep all these poor millennial kids from finding jobs. Usually, these issues revolve around structural economics that are hard to define, so trying to pretend that there's some collective will among people born between 1945-1960 to frick over the future is absurd.

I'm a millennial and we should be worried a lot more about the future than pointing fingers at the Baby Boomers. There are going to be grand, unprecedented economic problems that we are going to face, and whining enviously about a previous generation like a bunch of petulant bitches is not going to help.

That, and any generation that votes overwhelmingly for Barack Obama should never talk about others being "entitled."

That's just the thing: these complex structural issues were foreseeable twenty or more years ago, and a single generation has been in power for almost twenty-five years now. They continuously kicked the can down the road again and again and again. It's not like this is some new problem that all of the sudden arrived at our doorstep.

I am not a big fan of Millennials, either (and like Scruffy, have never voted for a Democrat in my life), but a considerable amount of ire should be directed their way; it's important to extricate all the generations around them (Greatest and Silent on the older end, X on the younger end), strip it to its bare bones, and truly examine what this group has done. That have fricked us true and good.

I agree with you to an extent about Obama, but we're talking about a group of people that helped elect Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon.

I wouldn't call SS living the good life. At least not for my generation when we retire in 20 years.

No, but the lack of higher SS taxes during peak productive years, an extension of the age on which one can draw SS, means testing...motherfricking SOMETHING.

It's kept large sums of wealth in private Boomer pockets and left a giant hole in public monies that could crush the next few generations.

That's not even mentioning Medicare.

*sigh*

Y'all have a very incorrect view of how much GPs, and probably doctors in general, make.

No, it is the equivalent of blaming your parents for leaving you and your family with trillions in debt after they die.

So do you want to address trillions in projected unfunded Boomer liabilities? Absurd input/output ratios?

Or are you going to sit there and lecture and not actually examine the minutiae?

It'd actually be more like if my parents passed away and left me a half-million in debt on their estate when I was 30, if you want a more accurate comparison.

Fill me in. What does the average GP in La make? Cardio? Neurosurgeon?

Come on man it's not that simple. A nation's debt is not the same as a household's debt for numerous reasons. And anyway the problem with the national debt isn't this mythic group called the baby boomers, it's systemic waste and graft on the federal level that has been going on since at least WWII.

The UALs are not going to be that big of a problem.

Well, considering that I'm doing pediatrics, the average is $140k.

The highest paying are ortho and cardio and they average $460k.

The average salary for physicians is around $180k. That is nationwide.

Also, I don't live in La anymore.

The only pensions that are going to take a hit are going to be in municipalities that go chapter 9. The state and federal systems have enough current employees to stay solvent even through the next 20 years at which point the Boomers will begin to die off. That's all been determined by the actuaries so it's basically a guarantee.

Now, I'll give you that IF the state governments start raiding or selling off the pension funds to the banks then we will have a problem but that's all conjecture at this point.

I don't disagree with you that the country is in the shitter, by the way, but I don't agree with you as to the reason.

I will say, as a Chicago resident, that's a bit of a laugher, though it probably does hold true for large parts of the country; I would bet significant sums of money that my city and state declare bankruptcy before 2025.

Social Security has run 50+B deficits four years in a row: do you see that doing anything but having exponential growth any time soon with our demographics?

That's not even taking into account Medicare.

Yeah that's true. Chicago might end up having to burn city employees pensions, but that's because of horribly mismanaged city government and corruption going back at least a hundred years.

Social security will be fine, but they'll probably have to raise the retirement age to 64 or 65.

Medicare and the healthcare system is a massive frick you are right about that one.

ETA- nevermind they're almost surely going to raise the retirement age to 67-68.

And God bless you. I really mean that. Most Docs I meet (I have family in medicine), are very compassionate people who truly want to help others. I can see the sacrifice y'all make but in the end you'll come fine. Focus on your patients, the money will come. I know they bitch about the plant worker making $80-100K first year out, but it is what it is. Best wishes to you

It must suck so hard to be gen x, gen y, mellinial. Get your noses out of your phones. Interact and actually talk to people. Have a dream and live it.

This is America, the land of opportunity. I'm a boomer who grew up poor. I now own 3 companies that I created myself. I got no outside help. I'd retire tomorrow if I wanted to, but I'm having way too much fun solving my clients' problems. Making money while doing it is a happy circumstance, but this is a capitalistic society and I profit because of it.

Most of you complaining little sycophants have no idea how lucky you are to be born in America. Most of you are also caucasian. YOU HIT THE MUTHA FLIPPIN' LOTTERY THE DAY YOU WERE BORN!!! Now, do something with your incredible luck.

You're wasting your time talking to these morons. They can't do the simple math required to show them they're pissed off for no reason.

Lyndon Johnson? The first of the Baby Boomers were just reaching voting age when that sack of shite was elected. There was no great wave of young Baby Boomers voting for him. The great wave of later Boomers voted Republican, trying to reduce government.

The Social Security Act was passed in 1935, they can't do the math on that either, apparently.

And of course, they can't see there's a difference between Republican and Democrat Boomers. When Ronald Reagan was elected, the Democratic Congress fought him at every turn.

I'm sure I could go on, but what's the point? They've convinced themselves that they're victims. We wonder why the Free shite Army is so huge.

It must suck to be so stupid.
