You are exactly right BigBrod81. The zone read allows us to leave the backside end unblocked. It can also be run as a midline and leave the 3T unblocked, this usually happens if you can't block him! It also gives the defense another look to prepare for. Throw in potential play action off the zone read that freezes the backers and safeties as you pointed out.
You can also fake zone one way and run jet sweep the other, or vice versa. I think it's a solid move and both Harris and Fournette have experience running it.

Bingo.
Oregon uses the zone read play fake to attack defenses down the seams relentlessly. I'm not sure I've seen an offense attack the seams like they do. The fake action delays the safety from getting to his proper depth, allowing for some chunk passing plays because TE's & slot receivers end up gettin unchecked, running uncovered down the seams.
Auburn, Texas A&M & many of the Big XII Air Raid attacks focus more on the outside receivers for their big plays downfield. They will occasionally hit seam passes but their intent is to attack vertically outside the numbers. It's a way to basically get man coverage on the outside even when a defense has a double or single high safety look. The fake can force a safety to be late in his responsibilities in staying as deep as the deepest receiver thus giving the opportunity for a big play by the WR against one defender.

Yep, I hope we implement the read option (and PA passes off of it) this year.
