Damn and here I feel like I'm being robbed when I spend $25 on greens and cart.

there's no difference between the two ... just depends on how much you want to participate in them ... "just cycling" on the weekends vs "just playing golf" on the weekends would probably favor the cyclist since a decent bike can be had for $500-$1000 or so ...

I thought you had to be a elite PGA player to enter The Open? My friend is working his tail off trying to get ranked in the worldwide Top 500 right now in golf (750's).

Threeputt has played a bunch. He's elite, but he eats too much.

Should have seen me at the tennis club "trying" to learn, we were asked to leave and she had clout.
Well, to be honest she was asked to get me gone.

You can't compare anyone who competes in serious races to a recreational golfer. 90% of golfers don't enter tournaments. Same as most cyclists don't enter serious races. I'd say the average cyclist has 2-3 k in equipments and spends less than $100 a month on their hobby. Average golfer has $1500 in clubs, but pay $300 a month in green fees or memberships.

And to those saying they'd never spend 10k on a bike, you ever think what the average joe spends on a boat or hunting lease. Spending 10k on a bike is easier to swallow than someone who spends 75k on a bay boat.

I play golf a decent amount now. My wife bikes and I recently started myself. They're about a wash. You can spend over a thousand getting started with each hobby.

Golf: clubs, bag, balls

Cycling: Bike, cleats, helmet

Then you start adding on as you get better or just more serious...

Golf: Range finder, grips, fitting/lessons, club upgrade, bag upgrade

Cycling: Pump, gloves, cycling specific clothes, tool kit, bike upgrade

and anybody who is racing (and i mean racing, not doing gran fondo t-shirt rides) is NOT racing on a 10,000 dollar bike. or they're freaking nuts. "buy the most expensive bike you can afford to replace" isn't an axiom of racing for no reason. crashes happen.

that said, there are million-dollar freds who will sink that amount of money into bikes and consistently get dropped on group rides. and triathletes who buy cervelo P5s and still can't finish middle of pack in their age groups. but who cares in the end, right? if you can afford it, spend away on bikes or golf clubs or whatever. you can't take it with you.

Damn, you're doing it wrong if you spend $75K and cant at least get a center console deep v to get you offshore.

I think with golf you have a lot less flexibility with green fees unless you're willing to play somewhere like Webb Park every damned weekend. Biking you could potentially get a used bike for $1500 and ride to your hearts content. Maybe some new tires every once in a while. Golfing you can't get away from green fees. So golf is theoretically more expensive.

Golf more expensive by far. You get your bike and gear and you're set for awhile. Getting your clubs and bag are only the start of the expense for golf.
