Anyone have their own lawn service?

What does it cost to start up with the equipment and trailer? Did you just take a loan out and pay it off as you made money? How hard was it to build a customer base? Do you make them sign contracts? What do you during the off months when grass isn't growing as fast but they have a contract?

You serious ?
It costs whatever trailer and mower you want to buy costs
Continue being poor

Contracts? When I was a kid I would just knock on doors and ask if they needed their lawn mowed for a few bucks.

I don't own one, but they are a dime a dozen in my town. I would buy a good push mower, and offer to cut people's yard on the cheap. After you get some word of mouth clients, you can worry about making money. IMO, it would be foolish to invest a ton of money, in a business that is saturated with people doing that.

You sure do rely on the OT for alot of your questions and problems

I never said I was starting a company but thanks. I was just curious because I see so many different companies around town that these questions always come to mind.

Seriously if you don't know how much it will cost, don't try. You will get eaten alive.

Pro: cheap to start, easy to get customers.
Cons: same as the Pros.
It is actually difficult to find a competent company on the commercial side. Quantity and performance are uneven, at best.

So naive
Plenty of those guys make well over $100K in the Summer with a lot of it in cash then have Winter months off to hunt.
Not all of them obviously but I know a few that do well.
I have grass crews that cut at vacant houses for me and a few of the ones that hustle average $2500 per week with a 2 man crew and still have private clients they make more off of.

A lot more of them have popped up since O&G has died down.

And of course, they report all their cash income.

I agree you can be successful. But it's hard to separate from the pack. Most live lower middle class lives

Of course they do. Who wouldn't?

The problem most of the bigger operations have, that use large enclosed trailers, is they go out and buy the nicest truck nuts money can buy, but they aren't visible.

Sure that's the average I would bet.
A guy I know somehow fell into some very good contracts at multi-track government houses all over the state. He has a huge cargo gooseneck he pulls and 5 of the best Skag mowers you can buy. Those mowers cost like $14K each. It's nothing for them to cut 400 houses a day. I know he makes a lot of money and I wouldn't be shocked if he was clearing $180K+ off of it.

Lot of people think they need to buy a 10g zero turn before they even have a yard to cut. Guy in my neighborhood has a nice push more and a snapper. Dude wears flip flops and a wife beater, and has a ton of yards. His over head can't be much.
