Probably because men don't have babies and periods and menopause.

There may now be a wage gap developing between childless women that actually swings in the favor of women (they are allegedly making $1.08 for every $1.00 of their same age 35-43 year old counterparts).
Yea, you need to actually read that study. Those women were more likely to have more education, more job experience, etc then the men.
Thus, the sentence afterwards that I wrote - mentioning that younger women may be more qualified as a group than younger men. Men are dropping out of high school in higher numbers, going to jail in higher numbers, convicted of crimes in higher numbers, and graduating from college and graduate school in lower numbers than women.
Some of this is probably gender and societal bias against men FWIW. No tolerance policies hit boys harder, punishment for sexual acts generally hits boys more than girls (even when both participate consensually), and the criminal system is heavily weighted in your favor if you are a woman. Money obviously matters enormously in our legal system but there's enough data to show that men up on similar charges to women are more likely to be convicted (even when the defendants have similar backgrounds and are up on identical charges) and more likely to be sentenced more heavily.

It's human nature. If you watch the video from the link I posted, it's self evident that men are more likely to negotiate for higher pay. Men, as the traditional breadwinners for their kids and for their retirement, are going to have more pressure to maximize their wages. This phenomenon has been diminished over the past few generations as more women enter the workforce, but it's still there.
Women also have a disadvantage in that they can get pregnant multiple times, are entitled to maternity leave when they do, and are a risk to retire early, as many of them do, when they have kids and their priorities understandably change.
John Oliver, like Jon Stewart, is kind of a piece of shite in that he makes a living off strawmen. He can hide behind his comedy medium to try to influence the beliefs of a pretty stupid audience.
