This police file shows why you should keep up with what your kids do online.

I can't believe some of the comments made on another thread about a parent wanting to keep tabs on what his 14 year old daughter does with a computer. Some of you are friggin clueless and are a bunch of limp wristed limp dicks who don't even know how to stand up to your own kid.
This link is to a police file on a case in Mississippi. The teen was seduced by her softball coaches. This file is the raw police file and shows exactly how this stuff happens. It started when she was 13 but the sex stuff started at age 14 or 15. They were working on her the whole time- both the husband and wife. They are in prison now serving time.
This file shows exactly how this stuff takes place and frankly, some of you morons need to wake the hell up. Dumbasses.
You clowns wouldn't let a 13 or 14 year old shoot a gun or drive a car but will just give her uncontrolled and unmonitored access to a computer and trust her to do the right thing.

It isn't that. It is more about the fact you have to start giving kids some space at a certain point. So they can feel like they have some control over at least a small aspect of their life. If they are responsible with that, you give them more.
Not so simply put, if kids don't gradually learn how to control situations as they arise in relation to the small responsibilities parents give them, they will be fricked in the real world when everything gets dropped on them at once.
The case you are trying to use as an example is one that could have happened even with a parent heavily involved. Why? Because it was two adults the parents regularly trusted their kids with, a coach.
Edit: My first child wont be born until September. However, I am a Youth Pastor, and I do as much raising as half my kid's parents. Overly sheltered kids do not do well, in my experience, when trying to leave the nest.

I did both of those before I was 14 and I'd let my kid do both before it was 14.
Also, who would read a 14 year old seduction plan? That's psychotic if you ask me.

I have a 14 y.o. boy, 11 and 2 y.o girls and a boy on the way.
House rules
No social media (negatives far outweigh the positives)
I'm the last one to bed during the week during school. (14 y.o. can stay up to midnight otherwise unless he has games/practices the next day)
No phones/iThings/laptops in the room
School first, school first, school first
Also, both older kids hunt, fish, and are very active.

Have you been to Louisiana?
Wasn't long ago that 14 was the age that you took driver's ed.

I was taught to shoot around 11 or 12 (once my arms were long enough for the rifle), learned to drive around 13 or 14 (lived on a big farm). There is no one answer for everyone other than "know your kids, don't lie to yourself about them".

My parents never looked at my internet history or text messages and I turned out fine.

My wife and I have a rule in our house. at 5 minutes before bed time all the kids electronics or their power cords are brought to us and we put them in our bedroom for the night.
No since tempting fate. And their computer is kept in the game room.

I will say that I have let my 14 year old son both shoot a gun and drive a car...but only when supervised. I wouldn't turn him loose to drive on the street, or give him the gun without training him on how to properly handle it (then limiting its use to times when he is under adult supervision).

I was taking your post seriously until your last 2 sentences. Since you want to take that road....frick you! I don't give a frick about how you raise your kids. Don't try to tell me how to raise mine!

So one bad thing happens and kids shouldn't have some freedom? Do you also monitor your kids 24/7 when they step outside because there might be a serial killer?

Absolutely. You should also "keep up" with what they do offline.

The other thread was more about eliminating unsupervised access to the computer than "keeping tabs" on what she does with it.
The rest of your post is a string of insults with a worst case example tied in to create fear. Not sure how much support you planned on gaining with that approach.
As a parent you should, first and foremost, know your child. Be interested in everything they do. Second, have the tough conversations about the dangers they could run in to when they are online or off. Third, establish clear behavioral boundaries with consequences for crossing those boundaries. Then comes the hard part, stand back and give them the space to either behave like the child you raised or screw up and lose your trust.

Ummm, yes we would.

Every parent will eventually reach the day where their kid will have "uncontrolled and unmonitored access" to everything in the world. How your kid reacts to that level of freedom is based, in no small part, on how used to making the right decisions you've managed to make your kid.

What computer? It sounds like they were doing everything on cell phones.

Where in the hell did this come from? Why are YOU so pissed off at nobody in particular?
quote:

I think most gun owners would allow their 13-14 year old to shoot a gun. All of my siblings and I were shooting guns much younger than that.

or drive a car
Normally, no, but that's because you need a license and you can't get one that young. I do know that parents sometimes let a 13-14 year old operate a vehicle in off-road situations.
quote:

You mean a cell phone? Yes, most 13-14 year old kids have cell phones. The chance of their being seduced by someone through text messages is outweighed by the security of knowing they can call for help whenever they need it. I think giving cell phones to teens is a good idea, even though I know they sometimes use them for purposes I would not want them to.
quote:
trust her to do the right thing.
Eventually, every parent will end up having to do this. It's just a question of when.
From your inexplicably angry tone, I can only assume that you are somehow personally involved in this. Was this your daughter?
