Popped this bastad over the weekend using my dad's .22 with rat shot. Was just curious if anyone has any experience using rat shot from a semi auto .45

A dead snake is a good snake.

I would think that 45 rat shot probably won't have enough energy to cycle the slide. It's been a long time since I've shot rat shot from a handgun but most of the time it's pretty weak. I guess if you're willing to rack each round in individually it would probably be okay though.

I have an older S&W 5906 that I keep 9mm rat shot in at the camp and it cycles fine. It also had a spread of about 3' from 5' out so any poisonous devil that comes close will be hit 10 times out of 10.

The 9mm rat shot doesn't for sure. It will frick up a snake you just a to rack another in it

Nice kill

As said above it won't cycle in a semi auto. Use a revolver.

Options:

A. use .45 ACP rat shot and rack the slide to eject ~$15

B. buy a revolver to kill snakes ~$300

hmmmmmmmm............

Did you measure how long that rattler was?

I tested some snake shot (CCI) in a 9mm Glock (G19) and in a .40 (G23). Surprisingly (to me) the ammo cycled pretty well.

The 9mm failed to insert a new cartridge about every 8-9 shots. The .40 never did malfunction.

I would definitely recommend testing snake shot ammo in your particular handgun. And I agree that revolvers should be more reliable for shooting this type of ammo.

The other benefit of using a .38/.357 revolver is that CCI snake shot loads in this caliber contain #9 shot. (The 9mm loads contain #12 shot.) Either should do fine on a snake, but I'd prefer the #9 shot.

And if you pick "B" you will have a revolver!

If you want it to cycle, you could always put a lighter recoil spring in it when using the rat shot. Just make sure not to shoot anything but light loads out of it with the lighter spring.

On another note I haven't found any 45 rat shot. The 9mm I've found at several places.

Sorry baw, I was under the impression every self respecting southerner had a revolver. So by your logic, why buy rat shot when you can use a shovel? You do have a shovel right?

Has anyone been able to find .38 rat shot? I don't think CCI is making it anymore.

You can roll your own if you reload. But CCI still makes the ammo.

they make a .357 rat shot? I've seen .38 around. I've got a river .357 snubby that is a dust collector. Might have found a use for it finally.
