When they started saying they were just going to be another Sandy Springs, GA...I knew it was smoke and mirrors.
Yea. A city in a metro area of 5M+ with multiple Fortune 500 HQ's in their limits, significant white majority, and HHI average $100k+ was going to be the same as St. George.

$$$ saved by not having to send your kid(s) to private school
this was THE factor in determining where we were gonna build... we already live in Ascension, but want to be closer to BR.... Geismar/Dutchtown just fit the bill perfectly....

I'm surprised they came as close as they did with this thing as unorganized as it was .. They never really had their shite together ..
Right! Imagine if these fools had to actually run a city.

Why was so much effort put into keeping people from signing the petition or removing their names if they already had, as opposed to people just voting no if it got to an election?
Well, there was the massive fear that once it got out to the masses, you'd have a lot of people with no vested interest whatsoever voting for the thing .. These types of votes are successful more often than not .. Keeping it off the ballot was the only tried and true way to guarantee defeat, or at least delay it ..

Yep .. That was just straight up dumb and came off as a desperate effort to force people out of their houses to run to the Kean's parking lot on Jones Creek to sign the petition ..

The school system was the entire centerpiece and driving force behind the effort .. A major option was certainly going to be completely taking the existing schools within the boundaries over, much like the City of Central did ... It was this promise that seduced a lot of people into getting behind this thing ... So, yes, there were a lot of questions as to how the "city" was going to run its schools if it so chose to do such ..
What I was saying was that even after incorporation, there would have to be separate parishwide and statewide votes for the school system.

Nailed it.
Told my wife this when the whole thing cranked up 2 yrs ago. I believe it was their lack of depth to the south of the interstate. Most of the strong support seemed to be where the original breakaway school district was located.
It's too bad...I really had some hope it would happen. Guess you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

You and I need to get involved on the next go around, Golfer ..

I live in BR proper
Pro school district. Don't see the need for the city.

Exactly .. the boundaries just kept growing and growing to the point where the whole thing just became way too ambitious ... If they would have stuck to the original foot print, it might have worked .. but you had a bunch of people raising their hands crying "what about us ???", "we want in" ... etc .. Then they added the Gardere area so as to not appear to be what a lot of the plan's critics claimed was the driving force behind the whole thing ... It just got too big, too diverse, and the unity never had a chance ... They never stopped to realize the math that the more areas you add, the bigger number 25% becomes .. Nobody was knocking on doors on Burbank .. you didn't see signature tables set up around Jefferson Terrace .. The main efforts were in the very area the whole thing started in .. George O'Neal/Jones Creek/Coursey ..

Welp it's offically official that my kid is going to private school in the future.

Well, next step is massive flight out of Baton Rouge.

I have had my doubts there was going to be much support elsewhere anyway.

The "feel" of BR? Ugh. BR feels like traffic and failure.

This would have worked fine for our area. It has for central and they don't have nearly the population or household income Shenandoah does.
Amazing what lengths they will test to save the below par status quo. Shameful.

Say goodbye to that extra 5k in disposable income.

Meh .. if you live in the area of Shenandoah .. just make sure your kid at least gets into the Great Scholars program at Woodlawn Middle and Woodlawn High .. They'll actually get a far better education than they will at most schools outside of Catholic High and Episcopal .. You're paying taxes to fund the program anyway .. You might as well use it .. Public school at least prepares your kid for the reality of the world they are going to have to live in the rest of their adult lives ..

i guess i mean closer to places to eat, movie theaters, shopping, etc....
overall, BR doesn't offer much in terms of "things to do" outside of LSU sports, but there's more there than in Geismar for sure... but at least in Geismar i don't have to pay for private school....
