I'm surprised they came as close as they did with this thing as unorganized as it was .. They never really had their shite together ..
Yea. They could have blown this thing out of the water.

There is/was a bunch of BS on both sides .. It was a big reason why I never really got involved, despite the incredible vested interest I would have had in a City of St. George ... This group just didn't have its act together .. They never really could answer how this entire "city" and its infrastructure was going to be funded .. This group couldn't really answer how this entirely new school system and its physical plant was going to be funded ... It was relying far too much on sales tax collections .. They danced around the issue of property tax increases ... Problem was that this leadership didn't have one high-profile person as the face of it and never ever really explained to concerned citizens what this would mean to them, both good and bad ... Maybe in two years -- after learning lessons from the mistakes made this time -- a new group will step forward that has its shite together and make a better run at this ..

Fair statement. Certainly can't argue with that.

The school system was not going to be automatic after incorporation.

this is what interested me, when we were picking out a spot to build our new house.... opted to stay in Ascension, where i know the school system is good.... but still close enough to have the feel of BR...

Thank you Better Together. I can hear my property values rising in Livingston Parish. Great job!

This is a good explanation of my uneasiness with the situation. It was always like "look we don't have to raise taxes". No explanation of why, and their leader is a guy/consultant from rural Alabama who really doesn't have any pull.

The school system was the entire centerpiece and driving force behind the effort .. A major option was certainly going to be completely taking the existing schools within the boundaries over, much like the City of Central did ... It was this promise that seduced a lot of people into getting behind this thing ... So, yes, there were a lot of questions as to how the "city" was going to run its schools if it so chose to do such ..

It's a damn good bet most of the withdrawals are not legit at all.

I strongly considered getting heavily involved in the beginning and was in on a lot of the early talks in small groups at the coffee shop or bar .. Hell, I even thought about running for office out here ... But the group had too many factions and never really had one central ideal ..

Why was so much effort put into keeping people from signing the petition or removing their names if they already had, as opposed to people just voting no if it got to an election?

Parish leaders in both should start a PR campaign about amount of $$$ saved by not having to send your kid(s) to private school just because of where you live.

I signed then moved 2 miles up Perkins from 70810 to 08. I'm one of the badigans.

I could be wrong but I believe that St. George said they were going to contract out a lot of city services like fire, policing to EBRSO and whatnot and a majority of taxes would be going to the schools. A lot of things a city normally does were going to be privatized and I don't know if that would've really worked out in the long run.

I fricking laughed my arse off at this when it came to light and fruition .. I just couldn't believe it .. The guy didn't even have the practical background to spearhead the thing ... You would have laughed at some of the ideas a lot of these "leaders" had on organizing and gathering signatures, as well as the validation process ..

I always thought they could never really get the school system proponents, small-gov conservatives, and those that thought BR proper got "more" (e.g. Downtown) to fight the cause together.

Did you move before 10/28/14?

This was a midstream shift to alleviate increased tax fears .. You are right .. this wouldn't have worked in the long run and would have caused major problems ..
Hell, the jury is still out in a lot of ways on the City of Central .. They obviously were more unified and had the act much better together, but now they are trying to execute, they are starting to do some things on the fly that could cause long term issues ..
