The first time I ever went into an Aldi (quite awhile ago) I thought I was going to find lots of German goods.

Boy was I disappointed.

Aldi has the best price on produce, period. With three kids, we save hundreds of $ shopping at Aldi.

You have to pay a quarter to get a cart but when you return it you get your quarter back.

And they charge if you don't bring your own bags (or use some of their old boxes).

No, it's like Trader Joes and IKEA had an orgy with a Soviet supermarket and a Family Dollar

I know, the weirdest families in my hometown church loved Aldi, which is where I got that impression.

They have carts, but you have to put in a quarter to get them out of the rack...you get your quarter back when you return the cart. That keeps them from having to pay someone just to round up grocery carts from the parking lot.

Typically the entire store will have 3 or 4 employees working on any particular shift. Their overhead is crazy low.

It is a pain the first time....but basically, you stick a box in your cart to put the groceries in, and you keep a quarter in your car to put in the deposit on the shopping cart.

For your effort, you pay about 40% of what you would at Kroger for your food.

I have been paying $.89 for a dozen eggs there (it has risen to $.99 in the last month). We eat a ton of eggs at our house. They are about 2x that at Kroger.

I eat eggs every.single.DAY

I just know I'm going to be the idiot who is clueless and looks like he has no idea what I'm doing the first time I go. And I hate that.

Do you they have a McDonalds in the store so I can get my upsized double quarter pounder meal with a Diet Coke while I shop?

I'm sure ALDI's clientele is weird as hell, but in my limited experience I guarantee it's more efficient than Wal-Mart. It may be poor, but it's not the clusterfrick that is Wal-Mart.
