What brand do you use?
Are they worth owning?
Do you feel you can haul arse and never get caught?

Waze.

I do. I think it may be a cobra. Not sure. Only issue has been the radar/laser that some of the troopers in Mississippi and Alabama shoot. Won't pick it up. Other than that, it has gotten me out of quite a bit of tix here.

At the moment no, but I used a passport 8500 for a long time and yes it got me out of a few tickets.

V1 on a BlendMount tapped into my rear view mirror. I love it and def think it is worth owning.
It makes it easier to haul arse but you can still get caught if you arent paying attention. Combine it with Waze and your chances of being caught are even less.

I have one. I don't really use it to speed a lot. Not confident in it. It does tell me where red light camera's are, speed camera's and I can input speed trap areas so it warns me. That's all it's good for. I don't speed more than 10 over for the most part.

I went hunting in West Texas with someone that has one. He bought it and hooked it up in my truck for the 8 hour drive there and back, so I got quite the test drive out of it.
His was like a Passport 9000isx or something.
Yeah, but they aren't cheap.
Nope, that's what comes with practice driving with one.
On an interstate they are awesome because they pick up a cop radaring people a mile or more ahead of you giving you ample time to slow down before even seeing the cop.
On a desolate back road where you don't see anyone else, the first radar detection will be when he radars you... Then you will be fricked.

I use a V1 and waze. Nothing will completely stop you from getting caught but these tools sure do help. Up next, laser jammers!

I do.
Passport 9000isx. I wanted to buy the Valentine 1 but always hesitated when it came time to pay $400. I got the Passport because it had a $100 discount on cyber Monday.
I don't blindly trust it that much. But it does ease my mind some. I trust it the most on the interstate where things are much more open. Overall, I like having it but I don't know if I'd pay for it again. Mainly because I don't go on the interstate all that often and it doesn't do much for me in the city. But it is really nice to have on the interstate.
ETA: I also drive in a low car which is a disadvantage. The higher the radar detector is mounted, the more effective it is.

Got a valentine 1 from my now wife for my 21st birthday (27 now) and have not gotten a speeding ticket since in my truck. I had 5 or 6 from 16-21.I drive a lot, minimum 100 miles a day, so it's nice to have

Waze makes radar detectors useless.

Do you really need one these days...?
When the limit was 55 I had one, but now with it back up to 70, 75 in some parts, you can keep it under10 mph over the limit, and not get pulled over...
BTW, 55 sucked as a limit....
I hope to God it never goes to that again....

I have this cheap arse 12 year old radar detector probably not worth more than $10. But it still works and has been pretty useful.
But I don't really haul arse. I might do 5-10 over and just slow down when it beeps.
Probably not buying a new one once it goes out. I couldn't fathom spending $500 on the ones they have today.

I could type out several paragraphs, but I don't feel like it...
Cliff notes:
-You need to know how it works. It's just a tool and doesn't make you invincible.
- it won't protect you from laser. By the time laser hits your detector, they have your speed. They have laser jammers for this.
- passport and valentine one are the best. They can get pricey. I have a valentine. It was $400.
- read up on radar detector. Net and learn the ins and outs like the difference between bands, constant on vs instant on, etc.
- cobras are junk. Don't waste your money. I haven't looked in a while, but if you're on a budget the passport 8500 (if they still make it) is the best bang for your buck.
- I haven't gotten a ticket since I got my valentine because I know how to use it and how it works. It's only a tool.
- learn what radar or laser your city uses.
- the closest you'll get to being invincible will cost you about $1500. A good radar detector paired with a good laser jammer and using a "rabbit"

I have an Escort Passport 9500IX. It has GPS, saves all of the red light and speed cameras, and alerts you when you're approaching one. It's definitely worth the $450 if you drive a lot on the interstate. I had the Passport 8500 for 8 years before I got this new one.

You have to be a real dummy to get a ticket on the interstate.

Passport Escort. This is the one I have.

I bought it years ago and only use it now for long highway drives. I usually stay around 80-83 mph so its nice to have a heads up. It works fantastic I usually can get an idea of where they are from up to a mile away.

If you are doing this you are going to get caught eventually. Cops don't always have their radar guns turned on so they and just scan the one person they want to get and by the time you get the warning they already have you.
Cops in certain areas also use a new type of radar called "pop" radar. Basically it shoots one blast of radar at your car and most radar detectors cant pick it up. IF it does pick it up you have roughly 2 seconds to get down to the right speed.
In the end, I don't think it is worth it to be honest with you. Too much money if you are just a normal everyday driver. If you are the guy "hauling arse", just stop it that shite is annoying.
