I'm watching the pilot now, and it's pretty funny. But does the main girl talk like this the whole series? It's like she had a mild stroke or is handicapped at times. And don't get me wrong, I think she's pretty funny but man her voice is grating on my nerves every time she opens her mouth.

Was this something that others noticed?

the show struggles at first because there is too much focus on her. when they branch out and start featuring the side characters is when the show gets great. Schmidt is awesome

as for her voice I don't remember what it was like at the beginning but I don't think it changes that much

that's her voice the whole series, except when she does impersonations. but like fear says, the show focuses more on nick and the other guys and less on her so it's not as annoying as the show goes on. season 1 and 2 are fantastic. 3 falls off a bit but 4 was solid this year.

It sounds like she has a mouth full of water.

I'm a huge Damon Wayans, Jr. fan but I see he's already replaced by episode two (by a new "the black guy"). Per his Wiki page, he's in just over half of the episodes, but it kinda sucks that he's not one of the main ones. He cracks me up constantly.

The show is actually better without him and I'm a huge fan of his.

Damn, that's disappointing.

Also, I think I figured out what she sounds like...she sounds drunk. Like she's slurring her words.

he comes back about 7 episodes into season 3 (out of 23) and is a full cast member for all of season 4.

He left New Girl after filming the pilot, which I think is done way before the rest of the season, to do a different show that also started that same year. He chose the wrong show. That other show apparently sucked and got cancelled pretty quickly, so he was left without any job. He finally came back in season 3. I hated him in the pilot because he just came off as the angry black guy, but he was much more mellow and hilarious when he returned.

After reading this thread, do you really not know who Zoe Deschanel is? Or her shtick?

And Schmidt is an awesome character.

I never saw a single episode. I was just going off the fact it was cancelled and Wayans bet on the wrong horse.

Wayans was loud in the pilot and the least funny when he returned. The show was at it's best when he wasn't there.

Are you attempting to start a series watch? Because if you've chosen to start New Girl ahead of Parks and Rec...there isn't a casty big enough.

He didn't bet on the wrong horse. Happy Endings was filmed and not aired until late spring through summer of 2011. It was considered pretty much dead in the water so Wayans filmed the New Girl pilot in the spring of 2011 well after Happy Endings had finished its original production run.

When ABC unexpectedly renewed Happy Endings, Wayans became contractually obligated to stay with the show as performance talent often signs mutli-year contracts for a sitcom. It wasn't his choice to stay on Happy Endings; there was no choice.

Since Happy Endings had priority, New Girl added Lamorne Morris as Winston to the regular cast for episode two, the first episode filmed after the show was ordered to series.

Judging quality on television by whether or not a show in cancelled is a foolhardy effort. Happy Endings season one was somewhat funny; by season two that show really hit its stride and became one of the best things on TV. It's a shame it only made it three seasons.

I'd say Wayans made out ok. He was a regular for three seasons on Happy Endings before immediately being added back to New Girl once he was available. New Girl benefitted too as I've found Winston to be the absolute funniest character over the last two seasons.

Happy Endings was frickin awesome. Still don't know why the hell it got the axe.

I like both of these shows FWIW.

The show was better without Wayne's Jr

And better before they made Winston into a frickin creepo

I haven't seen the recent season though
