I have a close friend who knows the owners well and spends couple weeks a year out on it. Pretty cool set up, they are always looking for folks to go out and help maintain it as well.

I don't really understand what they are trying to create here?

Just guessing but a way to get money for general upkeep/preservation and some people would pay money to stay, to get away. They need to advertise better.

I always thought a GOM oil rig would make a great fishing camp / hotel. Only problem is you would need billionaire money to maintain it.

Prostitution is legal in international waters.

Would you Vacation Here? Frying Pan Tower Terrible fricking name... "Frying Pan"?! Really digging deep there
The shoals located around it are the frying pan shoals and have been marked since the mid 1800's. So if about 160 or so years is considered digging deep than I guess you are right.

I think it would be unique to ride out a hurricane there. Very intense, but it's obvious that place can handle them.

a ha!
Just like the gambling boat in Little River SC. They go out to sea a few miles and anchor and not one nano-second before, are the slot machines cranked on. It is nice winning a thousand bucks from one machine and NO TAXES because the boat is in international waters.

Bull Sharks can be pretty aggressive. Read a study that said the male bull shark has the highest level of testosterone of any animal. Not all are bad...some will leave you alone and some will run you off a wreck/dive site. You have to watch them pretty closely. Sand Tigers look bad but are really docile. Bottomline....you see one start to shake his head and drop his fins you best leave the water :)

In the first pic it looks like a weber charcoal grill that sat out in the yard for the last few days

[link=(www.flmnh.ufl.edu/fish/sharks/statistics/species3.htm)]some stats thst i would tend to trust[/link]
Seems to be locational, but there are four main species involved (not evident by those stats linked would be attacks by the Oceanic Whitetip). The Whitetip is attributed with lots of kills on castaways and deep-sea ship sinkings (particularly during WWI + WWII). There will never be stats on it- they don't really come into shallow, coastal waters (so they very rarely encounter humans), but in terms of attacks per encounters, it could easily be considered as aggressive as the other three with 100+ recorded attacks (White being way in the lead, tiger and bull a bit behind, but way ahead of the pack).
Now, that said, the most dangerous that you'll come into contact with is probably a White, Tiger, or Bull. Bulls seem to prefer lurking in murkier waters, so in the LA GOM waters, you're probably more likely to encounter them than others. You're also not particularly likely to be diving in murky coastal water, and LA beaches aren't necessarily the most frequently visited, so it probably brings those odds back down a bit. In deeper waters, it seems as if White and Tigers are the biggest threats that are most commonly seen.
I think a better way to look at it is "will attack unprovoked" vs "won't usually attack unprovoked," putting the 4 above in the former with the rest in the latter and, as Diver said, getting the hell out of dodge when one even looks like it's coming to you. Personally, I'd also stay away from any larger shark, particularly hammerheads. The numbers may not support it, but I really don't trust those guys. They look sneaky.

Thanks to you and diver for all of the info. I hear and saw some... (snorkeling) that the best dive, world round, is off the Havana, Cuba coast.

Why would anyone want to do that? It doesn't even look like there is anything to keep you occupied. They didn't even try to make an outdoor deck area or anything nice in general. It looks like a crappy shelf oil platform without all the work to keep you busy. I'd lose my mind.
I've got access to a crappy office building from the 1960's-1970's. I could tape pictures of the ocean to the windows and have seagull sounds on a loop in the background. I'll charge you half what they are charging and you'd get the same experience.
