BVI Sailboat Charter Recommendations/Experience

My wife and I want to charter a crewed sailboat with a group of friends in the Virgin Islands that holds 10 plus crew (captain and cook). Has anyone recommendations-experience with charter companies? Should I go through a broker?
Is it a bad idea to take a 10 year old along? My wife and I are the only ones that have sailing experience, everyone else has motor boat experience. I'm thinking we charter a catamaran, it's stable, fast, etc.

Capt.Joe is great. If he can't handle your group size he will recommend some one who can. Have painkiller at Foxy's for me.

Sailing/Diving Charter
Stayed on the Cuan Law over 13 years ago. We did a dive trip with 3 dives a day for a week. 100 foot long trimaran with full crew (7 I think) with a galley and 10 staterooms if I recall correctly. It's home port was Tortola BVI at the time.
If anyone scubas I would do this boat/trip in a second.
Was the trip of a lifetime honestly.

Option 1: Voyage Charters out of West End Tortola.
Option 2: Moorings out of Road Town Tortola
Definitely go with the Cat.
I think it would be great to bring the kid, but it somewhat depends on the kid. No better way to help them be confident and learn about the power, science and beauty of sailing. If you are the overly nervous type or of the kid is prone to motion sickness or is a general complainer-type, it can make the trip very difficult.
Wish I had grown up sailing.
Have a good trip.

I'd add the following:
Corsairs on Jost. Next bay over from Foxys and Soggy
Peter Island for lunch or dinner
Absolutely do Willie T but it's a tough one with a kid. It can get very raunchy there.

Wife and I did this trip 5 or 6 years ago with 5 other couples. We all left our kids home and I would recommend doing so as it will change the trip.
We went through a charter company and booked a 12 person cat. One week before we went the boat had to go in for repairs and our agent scrambled to get other boats. She ended up getting two boats to sub in at last minute. One was a 50 foot cat (swish) and one was a 72 foot monohull (sublime) We ended up with three couples on each boat but we stuck together and would either tie up with each other or would get mooring balls close to each other and just swim to each others boats. It ended up working out great this way. Gave us a little more space, only downside was that we weren't all together the whole time.
It was without a doubt the best vacation we have ever been on. Hit soggy dollar,Willy T's, did scuba, snorkel, several islands. Boat was all inclusive. Have tried to get the crew back together but it has been hard with kids schedules etc.

Thanks everyone for the good info. I'm thinking we charter a day trip in San Diego or Newport Beach and take a trial sail to see how everyone likes it. Most of these folks have never been on a sailboat. Can anyone recommend a charter sailboat group in southern California?
Thanks again, this is dream trip for me, I haven't sailed in ages. I just don't want it to end up being a catastrophe because of poor planning on my part.

I wouldn't know anyone in Southern California. We used a company called thecharteryachtcompany.com. None of the 12 people in our party are sailors or had been on a sailboat more than a couple times in our lives.
The broker was a former BVI crew member and knew the area. Some of the other responders probably know more than I do about charter companies. We were pleased with her and she did a great job finding us boats given the circumstances.
Several members of our crew get seasick and were worried about being sick the whole time but no one ended up getting sick on the trip. cats are typically thought to be more stable than monohulls but I ended up in the monohull and had a great time.
There is no way everyone won't have a great time. Just do it.

Lots off charter companies out of Nanny Cay. One summer we went for 10 days and the next for 16 including travel days but we had two couples, I ran power yachts so we just got a 46' from Virgin Charters and could not have been happier. First time was a bucket list item, second was just because we had such a great time on the first. We did everything ourselves. I certified two as openwater divers and we dove wherever we felt like it. Have to go back again while I am alive, it was superb for a water person. We did everything ourselves easily.

One of my best vacations was doing the same about 10 years ago, we chartered the breanker but I think the crew has changed. Captain was a dive captain so we done 2 or 3 times a day as well. Bushwhackers as soon as we surfaced. If you go through a reputable company you cannot go wrong. We did go through our alcohol ration in 2 days so we had to restock, keep that in mind.
