Touche. I can't stand Jemele Smith.

I don't support their opinions, but it's an interesting discussion given the obvious focus of the marketing campaign being Simmons, who is technically an amateur athlete.

Mike Smith said something along the lines of, "I guess it's mainly the blatant 'rub it in your face' obviousness of it that just seems wrong to me."

Yet they accept sponsorship dollars for their show in which the segment was filled with talk of an amateur atheletes.

Additionally, there are entire ESPN shows which revolve around amateur atheletes.

Hell, Mel Kiper exists because of the amateur athelete.

The irony.is that ESPN makes more money off of amateur athletes than anyone else. Then they use that money to pay people like hill and greeny to complain about it.

Not really. They get the opportunity to get an education for free. If they under preform, they can lose their scholarship. It's set up for the colleges, not the athletes. They should guarantee them 4 years at the university no matter what and if they aren't good enough to be on the team, then that scholarship doesn't count towards your total that's allotted by NCAA. If they did that, and ensured that they would take care of medical for any injury suffered during a game or practice then I'd be 100% ok.

You haven't heard, Mel Kiper works pro bono now given ESPNs stance on profiting off of amateur atheletes.

They're not wrong, just hypocrites.

ESPN did the same thing for an entire week with wall to wall Simmons marketing. They showed five of his *high school* games in five days, with title sponsors for each event from corporations like McDonald's and Dick's.

Everybody knows the star players are driving this engine, and everybody is making money but them.

It's a little unseemly that LSU is being so overt about it, sure, but it's not exactly a secret that Simmons was going to increase ticket sales and provide a huge revenue boost to the athletic department.

I actually think they should allot 6 years of scholarships or earning a degree, which ever comes first. LSU is judged based on its 6 year graduation rate, think it should be the same for the student athlete. Especially since its not the easiest to graduate on time as a student-athlete.

It's immoral Simmons doesn't get paid for his part in a multi-billion dollar industry. That said, it's insulting to think people aren't going to buy tickets because he's playing. Of course LSU should market him. That's not the evil. The evil is him getting cut out of all of the revenue he is generating.

I'd love that, too. Something definitely needs to change though.

I think that they are mad because they did not think of it 1st. When Seimone was here...she had billboards all over town promoting ticket sales. I remember her thinking that it was flattering and respectful that LSU was promoting the team with her likeness. Hell, Bertman said she was the biggest recruit in the history of all LSU sports. What 18 year old kid would not like all this attention. All this does his make "his" brand that much more attractive when he does go to the NBA after 1 year.

Can't stand Mike and Mike. But I love Jemele Hill and Mike Smith. His and Hers is my favorite podcast.

But the primise of their argument is right, LSU shouldn't be marketing just Simmons bc well it's basically an NBA marketing tactic used by a supposedly ametuar sport
