Is there going to be a black bear season in the future? (not that I'm interested in eating bear)

quote:

The Louisiana black bear is "saved" and no longer needs the protections of the Endangered Species Act, according to a news release from the Center for the Biological Diversity.

Gov. Bobby Jindal, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries are expected to hold a press conference on the subject Wednesday (May 20) afternoon.

The Louisiana black bear has met recovery goals 10 years ahead of schedule, according to the Center for Biological Diversity.

quote:

The Louisiana black bear — nicknamed for Teddy Roosevelt after he chose not to shoot one while hunting in Louisiana — is one of 16 unique subspecies of American black bears. Historically these animals ranged throughout Louisiana and into Texas, Mississippi and Arkansas. The Service protected them under the Act in 1992 because of pressures from hunting and habitat destruction and fragmentation. It is estimated there were only a few hundred bears at the time of listing.

quote:

Since listing under the Act, four breeding subpopulations of Louisiana black bears have emerged, likely supporting more than 500 bears. The areas supporting Louisiana black bear breeding subpopulations have increased more than 430 percent, from 340,000 acres to more than 1.4 million acres in Louisiana and Mississippi.

I surely don't understand the thrill in killing a bear, but to each his own.

Can you eat a bear? Or is it like killing a big coon?

It's the apex predator of this continent. How can it get any more thrilling than getting into bow range of that?

I have had it ground into a patty and it's decent. It kind of has an "oily" slightly gamey taste but not bad. From what I gather, bear meat, specifically black bear meat, is loaded with parasites so it always has to be cooked well done. I wouldnt mind trying some spare ribs or a roast sometime as a bear is the no.1 animal on my hit list.

Hunters up to the 1950's hunted them more for trophy value than meat.

quote:

Eat a bear that had been dining on berries and manzanita and you are in for a feast. Eat a bear that had gorged on salmon and it'll taste like low tide on a hot day.

FYI:

quote:

Bear meat has tended to receive mixed reviews. Its greasy, coarse texture and sweet flavor require a certain kind of palate. Bear meat should be thoroughly cooked as it can carry a parasitic infection known as trichinella and is potentially lethal to humans. Flavor is dependent on the age and diet of the bear. The best meat apparently comes from two-year-old bears which eat more berries than fish.

quote:

Black bear fur was considered more valuable in the American West than that of grizzly, and was once used to fabricate bearskins, which are tall fur caps worn as part of the ceremonial uniform of several regiments in various armies.

quote:

Bear fat can also be used as lamp fuel, with 40-50 grams being sufficient to last up to an hour.

One detail left out of the origin of the Teddy Bear story is that after Roosevelt declined to shoot it, it was killed out of pity and they ate on it the rest of his trip

A black bear with my bow is one of my top hunting goals in the next 5 years. Will likely go on a trip to Quebec to do it though

I'd think a Grizzly would be more of an apex predator than a berry eating Black Bear.

Why is that? Aside from Quebec being an awesome place in general. Why not just go out west and hunt public land?

I have no desire to hunt any predator.

Polar bears are the baddest dudes around if you really want to get technical, but of course a Grizzly is the king of the woods in North America. The question I originally was answering was "why would anyone want to kill a bear" or something along those lines. A Grizzly spot and stalk hunt with a bow in the Rockies would be the ultimate hunt IMO basically because a Grizzly can be doing the very same thing to you. Black bears account for 98% of the lower 48 bear population (I think) so that is certainly more doable and not nearly as dangerous as hunting a Grizzly.

So you're gonna bait an apex predator and shoot him over the barrel feeder? Sounds very apexish to me

Where did I say that? I actually specifically mentioned spot and stalk. Do you read?

You didn't mention spot and stalk until after I responded to tour original comment. Anyway, I hope that bear attacks you.

So you just assumed I want to hunt bear over bait, put words in my mouth, then attacked said unspoken words. You clearly have an agenda and came into this thread with an agenda. This isnt the OT.

I would not intentionally hunt a bear, and would only kill one in self defense.
I would however, like to have a hide.

I'd kill one if their population was at a nuisance level in a particular area.
