We hunt them and have them processed like you would a deer. Its not really all that greasy. Its a rush when you have one in a tree.

I would not intentionally hunt a bear, and would only kill one in self defense. I would however, like to have a hide.

I feel the exact same way about a tiger. Even if legal, I would never ever want to kill one. But God help the Tiger that tried to attack me, because holy crap do I want a full body tiger mount!

Florida has opened up a season this year because of nuisance bears. Its adrenaline pumped hunting. Be glad they have been taken off the endagered species list.

It's a long shot from Louisiana to that sign along 61 in MS, I would have declined to shoot too.

And whoever says they wouldn't shoot one has never had these little greedy boogers on their land. All they do is eat and hide, worse than a coon in your trash.

Don't understand hunting bear at all myself. Not much sport with gun, maybe with knife or bow.

Read the very early history of Louisiana/Mississippi area where the Natchez Indians were not "scared" of bears at all. They knew when they were traveling and they would meet bears on the trail, they would simply get off the trail and leave the bears alone, particularily with cubs.
But I don't understand paid high fenced "hunting" either.

Well, I am speaking of "hunting", not shooting. Didn't mean to change the subject. Shooting a trophy deer because you figured out its habits and ambushed him is an accomplishment. Having a dog tree a bear, walking up under the bear and shooting it (to me) isn't much sport. jmho. same as high fenced paid hunting for deer. no accomplishment. again jmho.

The state has to start opening up a limited season on these guys. They are becoming a nuisance.

Jesus, the 2nd person in this thread bashing bear hunting and completely jumping to conclusions. I dont care what anyone thinks, a bear is a more challenging animal to kill than a deer. They have a much greater sense of smell and do not pattern nearly as easily. There are other ways to hunt bear aside from shooting it over bait or treeing with dogs. A spot and stalk bear hunt with a bow may be the most challenging hunt one can do, aside from bull elk.

Yeah, that's not what he did. Try sticking to what was said instead of what you think was said.

But they may argue, they trained the dogs, patterned the bear, etc... Not just turning a hound loose and hoping he finds a bear trail.

I just like hearing different opinions on what is sportsman like. Every body has their own line they draw. Doesn't make anyone right or wrong just different.

We've got thousands up here in East TN. Can't imagine taking one out unless I was forced to.

Enjoy them and what they bring to the mountains too much to kill one just to say that I did.

Hogs/deer/coon/turkey are a different story

That's exactly what was said.

Not a single person said anything in this entire thread about shooting tree'd bears, much less compared it to deer hunting in any way, yet they were compared together in the same statement.

quote:

Don't understand hunting bear at all myself. Not much sport with gun, maybe with knife or bow.

Again, jumping to conclusions assuming everyone is sitting their hunting bears with rifles over bait. No, he didnt specifically say over bait in that particular quoted post, but it was insinuated by comparing it to deer hunting in this post...

quote:

Having a dog tree a bear, walking up under the bear and shooting it (to me) isn't much sport. jmho. same as high fenced paid hunting for deer. no accomplishment. again jmho.

He jumped to conclusions about tree'd bears and that automatically being the way someone would want to hunt bear, then put it down by saying it's not an accomplishment (it's not) by comparing it to patterning deer and hunting them. No one said they wanted to hunt tree'd bears, he just assumed that.

Also, why do you always have it out for me in these threads?

We have to train dogs to hunt bear before season which means runNing and treeing without guns. Anybody who says pulling dogs off a tree with a bear staring down at them from about 20 feet up and knowing that when the last dog comes off the tree he is coming down and isn't just a little intimidated is crazy. It ain't coon hunting.

Besides wanting a blanket/rug I have no desire to kill a bear. Shooting basically a black whinnie sitting on its arse eating molasses and powder sugar.
