Make a pro/con list and do what is best for your fam. Im from tx but live in la and both places are great for a young family.

If I had to choose between Baton Rouge and Houston I'd have to say Houston because it has more culture, better restaraunts and pro sports. I'd miss hunting and fishing in Louisiana/Alabama but I'd adjust.

That being said I'd pick NOLA, Laffy and even Houma before Houston or Baton Rouge.

The problem is that br doesn't have the big city amenities.

Correct... BR is TINY compared to other BIG cities in the south......

Also, the traffic is way worse than Nola or Houston IMO

There just is NO room to improve the interstate system in BR.....

Houston will always have more options. It's the 4th largest city if the country.

As several people have already stated, it all boils down to what you value most.

You shouldn't be comparing BR to big cities like Houston, Dallas or Atlanta.

Baton Rouge is comparable to cities like Birmingham, Jackson, and Columbia.

The absolutely shite terrible transportation infrastructure is what is holding BR back. Eventually, it will get better because it has to, and BR will begin to grow. They say a rising tide raises all boats. Once BR fixes its infrastructure problems, the whole city will being to see the benefits.

I am following the OP'S lead here.... BR is small compared to A Dallas or Houston... I am not a city guy anyway. I would live on the outskirts of any city . Even tiny ole BR.... BTW anyone planning to move to BR no matter the improvements would be a fool unless they can afford private school.........

Yep. The population of BR is roughly 230K.

I agree. The public school system in BR is a shite show and has been for several decades. The desegregation of the public schools in the early 80's fricked the schools up so badly that private schools began to spring up and flourish. It has been a downward spiral for public schools in BR ever since.

I have heard that the academic/magnet track in the BR public schools is actually pretty good. Is that wrong?

Bottom line is gonna be if being close to family over rides the appeal of Houston. To me it would, but I am from a very tight family and I keep a tight family. To others, it may not be that way, doesnt mean you dont love them as much, just means you can live away from them easier.

But shouldn't you put YOUR (immediate) family above others? It almost seems selfish to sacrifice YOUR (immediate) family for the company of other friends and relatives. Besides, Houston is only a 4 hour straight shot from Baton Rouge. It isn't like you're traveling cross country. Houston, hands down, has better schools (public and private) than Baton Rouge. 9/10 Houston jobs pay more than Baton Rouge jobs (helping you put away for college tuition, retirement, 401k, Roths, etc.)

Houston's pros and cons significantly outweigh Baton Rouge's imo.

MY immediate family is wife and six grown kids. Any of my kids that threaten to move away are immediately beaten. And by move away, I mean out of north louisiana.

Don't forget that in Texas, you pay no state income taxes.

Yes, you pay higher property taxes (if you own a home), but here in Louisiana, you'll pay both.

Don't be silly. The government is going to get their money. Just because they tax something different doesn't mean you will get out of paying.

Also, do you seriously think that if you live in Texas and rent that you are not paying property taxes? Believe me, you are paying.

Does it have to Baton Rouge? If you are an engineer in O&G I think you would have more opportunities in NO or heck even on the northshore. I lived in Houston for 7 years before moving to Mandeville and it was altogether a great move for us. Best place to live with a young family in LA. Great public schools and good clean community, only an hour drive to LSU for sporting events, 45 minute drive to NOLA, 3 hours to the best beaches in the US. But one of the best aspects of moving there versus Houston is you can buy a much nicer house within a 5-10 minute drive to the office as opposed to commuting from the Houston burbs.

Wife and I were in same situation. However we are currently in Nashville, but moving to BR in a week. Family is in BR, we are building a house in Prairieville and she actually got a better job in BR than she does here. Will certainly miss Nashville, but for what we valued the decision was clear for us to go.
