Saturday it looked like pic 1. But the whole thing was frosted and iced, there were no bare areas.
Now I have nothing but a little bit of frost on the first line.

It's a whirlpool which is GE right?
No.
Whirlpool is it's on brand. In a GE one board controls everything and can cause wonky issues. W/P don't have this problem.
I would bet almost anything that it's not the compressor though. Low on freon is FAR more likely than compressor issues causing this.
did you check the two places where air flows between the fridge and freezer?

motor, a new relay/overload kit (you can use a generic 3 in 1 it's fine)
Will pick these up today in houston and see if they help.

cheapest test fix....
Go to your appliance store, ask for a RCO410 three in one start kit. ($10) replace your entire compressor relay/start system with this unit. hell sometimes in testing we direct power it over night. It is very possible that you have a bad relay from the unit overheating due to the failing fan.
the relay is an engineered weak point and is designed to fail before the compressor does in overheat situations. It may cool and work sporadically but may cause further issues.
If you put the 3n1 on it (or pay the $50 for the proper replacement but Whirlpools are fine with the universal) (unless you have a three phase compressor - grey box with three harness to it, one going to compressor) you will be able to accurately see how the system runs with a known good relay and a strong capacitor.

Clean and not blocked as far as I can tell

Will do, I will report back

we want to always look to freon last of all.
So you need to verify that the relay is good. change the relay and the condensor fan.
90% of Whirlpools use the "hockey puck" fan for the condensors.
Good news is that they are cheap (should be around $40)
start kit looks like this
I'm not sure what relay you use, never got a model number
it looks like this..
In my experience the W10613606 works for most Whirlpools

I've got this on the side of the compressor.
My fan motor looks like a white rectangle
And I can't find this

ooh.
You use the expensive fan..
W10124096
detailed video on how to change it.
calls for 55 minutes of labor
The relay I posted earlier would work, but it calls for;
2304885
As a rule I replace the start system as one. Retail your start system would cost around $90, this is why I recommend buying the 3 n 1, as it replaces everything and once you know it's working with it, you can change the system with the factory parts.
so then capicitor:
2169373
and start device:
2183454

So I don't have one of these? I can't find it if I do.

This is a universal to replace
video on installing 3 in 1 start devices
I use them to direct power compressors when doing control board diagnostics. They work great, not factory though. With Whirlpool I prefer using their parts as all Whirlpool parts have a one year warranty.
Just saying for the DIYer, to make sure it isn't compressor or freon, I would buy the 3n1 rather than plop $100 on the factory parts.
and actually the white part is the only part that needs to be changed most likely if the system is bad.
You know the fan is bad.
now you want to see what part of the sealed system is causing your problems. Is it low on refrigerant? Not running long enough?
these questions are easier to answer once you know the relay is good.
