Yep. It's not a stretch to think that, especially coming from the man that Ned lost his life trying to support for the crown. And Stannis knows a little bit about loyalty himself.
I think it's not a stretch to think those who knew the Starks at that time thought there was more to the story. We all think it just from the little bit we've read on it.

It frustrates me how the Unsullied are set up as the greatest fighters Dany could get but they just got their arse handed to them pretty bad.

Im not sure I believe they are both dead. I mean worm stopped Barristan's throat from being slit and all. What would be the point of that.

As the Romans learned when they went from the Greek hoplite model to the Legionary model - for a defensive force, the hoplon and spear (clearly the model for the Unsullied are the Spartans - albeit a little less heavily armored) is fine and, with proper discipline, can make a reasonably effective general infantry formation.
But, the shield and spear do not work in either more open or more restricted fighting spaces. The Spartans at their peak were bronze age and did carry a short thrusting sword, but these were secondary weapons to serve until a replacement spear could be secured.
The Romans, understanding the need to govern conquered cities AND the need to cover more frontage with the same number of infantry soldiers, went to the iron age model that is, ultimately, the model for all western infantry until gunpowder (and even then, the vestiges remain) - solid upper torso armor, relatively unencumbered limbs (protection at the joints) - solid shield and short thrusting sword - that works in formation, even with some open space, that works in one-on-one engagements. Short sword is fast, flexible and sturdy.
The reason knights fight with longer swords is that they're often mounted and a long sword, flail, long handled axe would be necessary to fight other riders or even infantry on the ground.

I was listening to a podcast recently that said that Lord Stark was rather calm about the entire situation (alluding that he knew that Rhaegar didn't abduct her). It was Brandon that went enraged to KL and Lord Stark had to go to get him back.

I am 56 years old. I was in the Navy. I was an officer in the Navy. I went to the Naval Academy. I have read more books on tactics than you. It was my job, and I loved it. I played war games all of my life including RPG's. I was in SCA. So you really whiffed on that one.
Obviously, you don't know what your talking about.
What does any of that have to do with sword and shield tactics? Also, the phalanx was the epitome of sword and shield warfare. How was it made obsolete?

A great army doesn't necessarily translate to great fighters when not in their ranks and in close quarters.
I think we're also underestimating the prowess of the Sons of the Harpy. It's likely some of those guys are trained guards that have been aligned, and trained for defense, by the greater houses in Meereen. And we know they're also known for their fighting pits.

Unlike the books, there has been very little indication on the show that R+L=J, up to this point. I think the show just wanted to set it up, since it's pretty obvious to anyone whose read the books.

I keep seeing people here mention grayscale having some big effect. I'm blanking from the books...does it come up other than Shireen or them thinking Tyrion gets it when he gets attacked by those sea people?

They think Tyrion might have gotten it but he didn't. Although, Old Griff got it while pulling Tyrion out of the water. He's hiding it with his gloves for the moment.

And to those who think Mormont will be taking Barristan's place, the season trailer has a shot of Jorah fighting in what appears to be a fighting pit. So, it doesn't appear as though his reunion with Dany goes well for him. Or, maybe the slave story will play out on the show, and that's how she sees him again.

I think Jorah gets the grayscale pulling Tyrion out of the water in the next episode.
I think Jorah takes Barristan's place fighting in the fighting pits as well. Although Barristan vs Khrazz is one of my favorite moments in the books, I think Jorah would be good in that role on the show.
