Past thread about drugs - help looking

There was a thread a few weeks/month or so ago started by a guy dealing with a step son with a drug problem. I've searched and found a few threads that I remember, and they kind of blend together in memory. The one I was looking for, the OP related his own experience when younger and tried to convince his wife and mother in law of his step son's problem, but they didn't see it as seriously as he did until something happened (maybe death - can't remember). That's all I can remember besides there being a lot of personal experiences being shared, that at the time, I thought would make great discussion material for my kids (13/15). I just waited too long to bookmark.
I also remember a thread when the drug discussion had a lot of talk about insurance covering rehab. I can't remember if that was in the same thread as the one I'm looking for, but that may be another clue.
TIA

what is your question

What is a drug? An illegal drug? What if it's legal elsewhere but illegal here? Is alcohol a drug? What if it's prescribed? What if it's legally prescribed, just not to you? There a lot to this term 'drug.'

Best of luck to you or whomever you know who may be dealing with possible addiction issues.

I am the OP of one of those threads. Here's an update from 6 months ago.
My son completed 90 days at Palmetto, a great place and just what he needed.
He is now in a half way house, working, and paying most of his living expenses.
The drug dealer is in jail for a very long time thanks to my friends in high places, no pun intended.
We are out 25,000.00 but we saved my son's life.
Frick the insurance companies and frick drugs.
Frick drugs.

don't be too hard on alchohal and pot use and they probably will bever experiment. Be honest.
Coke = waste of money, short high, can't be achieved at same levelk again after onset, causing users to constantly uise when high and crave.
Heroin = can kill you because you don't know the potency, causes severe itching and can cause severe nausea.
Pain pills = can destroy your liver/ kidneys. severe itching, deadly if mixed with wrong things.
Psychadelics = can only be handled by someone with a strong mind.
Simply saying "No" isn't enough, they need to know why the answer is no.
What are the effects, both personal and legally?
"But Dad, if drugs are so bad why do people do them?"
Physical addiction, stay away from cigarettes to start (most drug addicts are already addicted to cigarettes, most casual hard drug users don;t smoke cigs)
People want drugs to escape where they are at that point.
The main reason people do them is that they make you feel good. But that good feeling isn't real. It's tricking your body to make it feel like it feels good, but in reality it's messing you up inside. I think if people knew why this one was bad, or what this one did, maybe they could make a better judgement on what to do.
There is a root cause why people do drugs. I my self am easily bored. So I like to smoke pot to overcome my boredom. When I travel, work or have company/famil around. I don't need to smoke because I have stimuli. But each person has their own reason. Vices exist in so many forms and drugs are just but one. I really feel that DARE and just say no has made more people WANT to try drugs and see what the fuss is about.
Personally I believe the best drug abuse education is to know exactly wht the drugs are and do. I defend pot all the time, but POT has a really bad side affect. It makes you comfortable in the now. When you are high, are you really worried about getting that new contract, or diversifying your portfolio? No, you want to relax and munch. You can be a bum and if you are high then you don't care. You can live in squalor and be happy.
I guess my ideas are formed one being able to see from the outside. Knowing I can try anything and not become a slave to it. Not everyone can. Not saying it makes one better than the other. Just that I see people who try oxycontin and then need to spend $300+ a week on 10 roxies. While others can bump a line of foil and not do it again for years. I believe and will always believe that an addict is a week minded person. One who let feeling and temptation trump rational thought. They knew the dangers, and instead of hitting and quiting, they put a ring on it. You have to know what you are facing. Stay away from the hard stuff. If it's made in a lab, you don't need it.
The biggest worry I have for the next generation is pharmaceuticals. Many people see them as "safe. The labs they are made in have standards, and truthfully they are not any more safe than other drugs. I mean freaking Aspirin kills more people than Cocaine does. It's crazy.
(you really don't Od on coke, crack is different, but ones an acid and ones a base and that all plays into chemistry an yada yada) All drugs have a side effect, every action has a reaction.
Rather than scare people and tell them to say "no" I prefer to actually be honest and say what the merits and negatives are of each drug. People will experiment. Most kids will try liquor and pot, and just telling them "they are bad until you are 21, then they are okay if they are legal" won't cut it.
But in closing to shape the young mind, scare tactics do work. Show some images of people on Krokodile and explain to them what happens when you try something and you don't know where it was made or whats in it.
When I get to that discussion I plan to try and be as honest as possible.
