Stuff happens (transit strikes leading to long/expensive taxi rides, demagnetized debit cards, empty ATMs, and an endless list of other possibilities)....most of us drive by or fairly close to a branch bank. With a phone call to the bank, you can get a few euros with no more trouble than buying a bag of chips. Peace of mind and flexibility immediately upon arrival--that's what I like.
If you're completely jet lagged, it's nice to simply stagger off the plane and have money in your pocket.

There are places to exchange money in all international airports. Traveling to Europe you should have no worries about getting cash from machines.

i do 2-3 international trips a year, and I have always been able to get cash walking off the plane with no problem.
Now leaving a country with no foreign currency is an art that I have yet to master.
