These "math problems" are really stupid. They rely totally on knowing the order of operations. They are always written out in a form that no one would ever use IRL.

What am I missing? Seems like a fairly simple math problem to me and the even give the answer. How is this bizarre and how does it "break the internet"?

The answer is 288
Write the equation like this to make it simpler
48 divided by 2 x (9+3)
so it then becomes 48 divided by 2 x 12
you then go from left to right. People are incorrectly multiplying 2(12) first, which is incorrect. The 2 is outside the parenthesis so it is simply 2 x 12
so 48 divided by 2 is 24
24X12 = 288

These things are so stupid. Replace the divided by symbol with fractional notation and most of this confusion goes away. It's a test in PEMDAS, and nothing else.
