I don't watch that much MLS but now I think the top MLS teams have as much "talent" as most average European second division teams, especially with the large number of central and south americans joining MLS.
I have a friend who coaches college soccer, he said MLS still lags behind in tactics and coaching, and also that MLS teams are just starting to develop homegrown talent. As that happens fans will be able to follow players up the ranks and create more of a following for teams.

I know you're not going to stop saying this because it fits your agenda, but it's just not true. Maybe around you, but otherwise we're all just regular folks who enjoy soccer along with a handful of other sports.

For a 20 year old league the talent level isn't terrible. I'll watch the high level playoff games and take it for what it's worth

They don't. Ive lived in two european countries and had season tickets to 2nd division soccer in Germany and the level of play you still see a gap. The players are far more technical in the 2nd divisions of Germany, Spain, England and Italy.
MLS is around League One(3rd division) in England. Its still exciting to watch due to being fast paced and very physical but the quality and technical ability is not there.

The MLS won't become a major league until the MLS youth teams start producing very good talent.
College soccer is one of the major problems with the development of American players.

The issue is the league for the most part can control where the talent goes unless a player comes through a youth academy.

The MLS operates under the franchise model like the other major american sports leagues.
Problem is this model does not work with soccer on the large scale. Around the world clubs operate own their own and compete in a league.
The MLS owns all player contracts and controls player movement. This would not fly in europe. MLS players just won a very restricted version of free agency in its most recent CBA. Before that there was none at all and if a players contract ran up and he wanted to stay in the league he was stuck with his team or the MLS would put him through an allocation and a team would pick him up.
When a team from Europe wants to buy a player from an MLS club, they actually buy him and do the negotiating with the MLS.

It's the same everywhere. It's a hipster fad.
This was something I have noticed on my own. I didn't even know it was a thing. After marveling at the number of hipsters I saw watching the World Cup, I went online to investigate.
It turns out that hipsters and soccer are a known thing that those in the soccer community know all about.
I didn't hear it from anyone or pick that up from anywhere... it was something I noticed on my own. I was wondering what the deal was with all of the hipsters. Now I know. They latched on and made it a fad.

My coach friend readily admits this. He is a big fan of the progress MLS has made with developing their local academies. He also said in some ways they are having the same issues college basketball has, in many cases the way the college game is played is not remotely close to the professional game, even at the lower levels, and does nothing for development of players.

Are there hipster soccer fans?
Of course and most of them support Liverpool.
But if you go to major cities and go to bars showing the EPL its mostly well traveled professional business types in there.

yea but to be fair so did a lot of people. So yea, hipsters jumped on, country folks jumped on, lots of kids who in turn made their parents fans, and then the average guy getting off work thinking, hey a bar and a sporting event sounds a lot more enjoyable than going home and cooking.
