I can assure you that I watch out for all drivers. I am not protected by a metal cage and potential death is all around me.

I have been hit once. I was making a left turn, which I signaled for, when a car pulled out to make their left and t-boned me. I had the right of way as they were at a stop sign and I wasn't. It threw me over the hood of their car. Funnily enough, it didn't damage my bike or myself other than road rash on my arms, but my left pedal went right through the driver's bumper and left a nice hole. He didn't want to call the cops, and I was a little shaken up and just wanted to get home, so we left it at that. I haven't gotten on my bike without a helmet since then.

There are a lot of a-hole cyclists in this world. There are also a lot of nice cyclists in this world that get a bad wrap because of the assholes. It kills me when I see cyclists run red lights or pass on the right when there isn't enough room (the 3-foot rule works both ways). There are way more a-hole drivers, though. The amount of potential accidents I've had to avoid because of careless drivers is astounding.

But whatever. This is a cyclists thread on the OT, so we are the scum of the earth.

And people still choose to ride bikes in traffic...pretty stupid.

In that case crossfit is your best attribute.

Who doesn't drive cars?

And yes genius, amazingly we feel entitled when we are on a ROAD designed for cars. Any dumb arse that decides he's improving his health by cycling in traffic and raising his chance at dying, is exactly that.....a dumb arse.

Well, when you live in the city, a lot of times it's quicker, cheaper, and less of hassle to use your bike rather than fight traffic and search for a parking spot.

I hate it when they choose to ride 3 or 4 in a row when you are trying to get to work. Irritating.

Where do you ride then? We've already established that walking/bike trails can be dangerous. I live in The Woodlands. There are bike trails everywhere. I originally thought I could do a lot of my riding there. No way I could do that. When you are riding 18-20 mph, you would easily hurt someone on those trails. There are quite a few roads with minimal traffic here that have lower speed limits and are sufficiently wide. I both drive on those roads and ride. I've never had a problem getting stuck behind other riders and I've never held up traffic myself. I'd personally pull off the road if I saw that traffic was building behind me and couldn't pass.

I do think it's the responsibility of the cyclist to make sure they are doing everything to be safe and aren't doing anything unnecessary to inconvenience drivers. You should wear bright colors, obey road laws, and go above and beyond to stay out of a car's way. You shouldn't have the attitude that you own the whole road for you exercise trip. And you shouldn't ride on certain roads (narrow, high traffic, high speed limit, etc.)

But at the same time, some drivers have the attitude that they can do whatever they want, because cyclist shouldn't be on the road. If a cyclist is in the middle of a lane, by all means lay on the horn when passing them by a safe distance. They are being a dick (but again, at a safe distance, because is it really worth risking a life). But if they aren't impeding your driving in the least, why go out of your way to be an arse (many people do this). If you pull out and cut off a car, you'd probably give an apologetic wave, but if you do that to the cyclist, he is an a-hole that shouldn't be on the road.

And as far as cycling or cross fit being worse, you should look up cyclocross. It's a real thing

I think this might stem from the cyclist I've encountered around BR when I was in school. They did tend to ride on roads that would annoy the crap out of me as a driver. You'd get stuck behind a group for a mile or two before you could pass. I still bitch when I get behind someone in that situation. You shouldn't be riding there at that time if you are constantly facing those issues as a cyclist.

Lol, nah. I used to ride quite a bit.

But I always knew many times I was not in control of being safe. Drivers really are not thinking a bike might be hauling arse by them when turning. Why would they?

I'm trying to think of a situation where I would be passing a car on it's right while it is turning. I don't see why any cyclist thinks they have the right of way to do that.

its one of the dangers of bike lanes

bike lanes are generally on the right side of the road and if there is no stop sign and a car is making a right turn, they might turn right in front of a bike

Or so he says. I didn't see much of the incident except a flash on my right when I attempted to turn into the parking space and then a guy trying to maintain his balance on his bike in front of me... which he did.

Seems it's legal here in Virginia for a cyclist to pass a car on the right... even within the same lane... and even between a moving car and a line of cars parallel- parked on a crowded city street.

Wait when did it become legal for dogs to drive?

I certainly didn't... and I didn't know what had just happened until I saw the guy panicking for balance in front of me. I was pretty furious, as was he.
